윤석열 대통령이 22일 "인류는 전례 없는 새로운 도전에 직면해 있으며 인류 자유·번영을 지켜내려면 강력한 연대 힘이 필요하다"며 "이런 연대 힘이 더 널리 확산된다면 인류 삶도 더욱 밝고 따뜻해질 것"이라고 강조했다.
윤 대통령은 이날 오후 부산 동구 부산항 국제전시컨벤션센터(BPEX)에서 열린 '27회 IAVE 2024 부산세계자원봉사대회' 개회식에 참석해 축사에서 전 세계 90여 개국 800여 명 자원봉사자를 격려하며 대회 개최를 축하하고 "국가 간 개발·기후·디지털 격차를 해소하는 데 선도적 역할을 하겠다"며 이같이 말했다.
세계자원봉사대회는 세계자원봉사협의회(IAVE)가 주최하는 자원봉사 분야 유일한 국제대회로 지난 1970년 미국 LA 대회를 시작으로 2년마다 개최되고 있다. 대한민국은 지난 2002년 서울대회 이후 22년 만에 유치에 성공한 가운데 대한민국 대통령이 세계자원봉사대회에 참석한 건 2002년 고 김대중 전 대통령 이후 22년 만이다.
윤 대통령은 "부산은 선한 연대 힘을 확인할 수 있는 최적 장소로 70여 년 전 피난민의 도시였으나 서로 돕고 나누고 배려하면서 전쟁 상처를 함께 이겨냈다"며 "부산항을 통해 들어온 세계 각국 구호물자·자원봉사자 헌신은 대한민국이 역경을 딛고 다시 일어서는 데 큰 힘이 됐다"고 말했다.
그러면서 "선한 의지로 서로 도울 때 얼마나 큰 기적을 일으킬 수 있는지 생생하게 보여주는 증거가 바로 부산이고 대한민국"이라며 "자원봉사로 더 나은 세상을 만드는 길에 대한민국이 앞장서겠다"고 약속했다.
또 한국 '정'과 유네스코 인류무형유산으로 지정된 '김장' 문화 등을 소개하며 "폭우·지진같은 재난이 발생했을 때도 우리나라 수많은 자원봉사자들이 달려가 피해를 복구하고 이재민을 도왔다"며 "대한민국 정부는 자원봉사가 우리 사회에 더 깊이 뿌리내릴 수 있도록 노력하고 있다"고 말했다.
이어 "앞으로도 자원봉사 문화가 더욱 확산되도록 든든하게 뒷받침하겠다"며 "국제사회를 향한 도움 손길도 더욱 늘릴 것"이라고 밝혔다.
