브레이크뉴스 문홍철 기자= 현대자동차그룹이 영국 런던대학교 단과대학인 동양 아프리카 대학(School of Oriental and African Studies, SOAS)에 아프리카 인재 육성을 위한 장학 제도를 설립한다.
현대차그룹은 SOAS와 지난 10일(현지시간) 런던대학교 SOAS 세네트 챔버 (Senate Chamber)에서 ‘현대차그룹 장학금(Hyundai Motor Group Scholarship) 기부 계약’을 체결했다고 밝혔다.
SOAS는 런던대학교를 구성하는 17개의 단과대학 가운데 하나다. 개발도상국, 아시아와 아프리카 지역 연구에 특화된 전문가를 양성하는 교육기관이다.
이날 행사에는 현대차그룹 GSO(Global Strategy Office)본부장 김흥수 부사장, 현대차&제네시스 영국법인장 애슐리 앤드류(Ashley Andrew) 상무, 기아 영국법인 사이먼 헤더링턴(Simon Hetherington) 상무, 런던대학교 아담 하비브(Adam Habib) 총장, 엘리사 반 웨이엔버그(Elisa Van Waeyenberge) 학장, 크리스토퍼 크레이머(Christopher Cramer) 교수 등 양측 주요 인사들이 참석했다.
현대차그룹은 올해 상반기부터 5년 동안 SOAS 내 아프리카 출신 석사, 박사급 학생을 매년 5명씩 선발하고, 총 150만 파운드의 등록금 및 생활비를 지원하는 SOAS 최대 규모의 장학 제도를 운영한다.
장학금 수혜자들은 학업 종료 이후에도 현대차그룹이 주최하는 다양한 네트워크 행사 및 세미나에 주기적으로 참여하는 등 현대차그룹의 아프리카 협력모델 수립과 실행을 위한 네트워크 활동을 이어갈 계획이다.
또한, 현대차그룹은 SOAS 내 아프리카 출신 학사, 석사급 학생 대상 ‘주니어 인턴십 과정’ 운영을 통해 현대차그룹의 아프리카 미래 비전을 소개하고 글로벌 비즈니스 경험을 제공할 예정이다.
현대차그룹은 ‘더 나은 미래를 향한 동행’이라는 그룹 비전의 실현을 목표로 아프리카 국가들과 상생 협력하기 위해 그룹사의 역량을 집결, 혁신적인 협력 모델을 수립해 나가고 있다.
이를 위해 현대차그룹과 SOAS는 지난해 민관 전문가들이 아프리카를 비롯한 개발도상국 산업화 방안을 논의하는 ‘개발 리더십 대화의 장 연구소(Development Leadership Dialogue Institute, DLD)’, 아프리카의 발전을 위한 구조적 변화를 연구하는 ‘지속가능한 구조변화 연구소(Centre for Sustainable Structural Transformation, CSST)’를 설립한 바 있다.
현대차그룹 GSO 본부장 김흥수 부사장은 “현대차그룹은 아프리카에 대한 근본적인 이해를 위해 SOAS와 함께 DLD 및 CSST 센터를 설립하고, 아프리카의 바람직한 미래를 위한 협력모델을 모색 중이다”며 “아프리카의 지속가능한 발전을 이끄는 차세대 리더를 육성하기 위해 현대차그룹의 장학제도를 설립하고, 아프리카의 미래세대를 육성하고자 한다”고 말했다.
한편, 현대차그룹은 세계 경제 대변환기에 아프리카의 지속가능한 발전을 위해 대내외 전문가를 육성하고, 아프리카의 다음 세대를 위한 중장기적인 협력 모델을 지속 구축해 나갈 예정이다.
