이날 개막식에는 약 3,000명이 참여하여 저녁 6시부터 개막 축하공연을 시작으로 개막식과 점등식, 제등행렬, 회향식 등 다양한 프로그램이 진행됐다.
점등식에서 형산강 연등숲과 거리등이 불을 밝혀주었고, 강 위로 불꽃놀이가 펼쳐져 축제의 분위기를 한층 고조시켰다. 그 후 연등문화축제의 백미인 제등행렬이 시작되었으며, 화려한 취타대를 선두로 장엄등과 함께 대한불교조계종 불국사 스님, 신도들, 동국대 WISE캠퍼스 교직원 및 재학생, 경주시민 등 3,000여 명이 금장대 둔치를 출발해 주요 거리를 행진했다.
제등행렬에는 대한불교조계종 불국사와 대한불교진각종 등에서 제공한 장엄등 11점이 전시되었으며, 많은 시민들과 관광객들이 그 아름다움에 감탄하고 사진을 촬영하거나 손을 흔들며 반기기도 했다. 이들은 장엄등에 합장하거나 절을 하며 행사에 적극적으로 동참하였다.
학교법인 동국대학교 이사장 돈관스님은 “동국대는 축제를 통해 천년 불교문화의 맥을 현대에 이어가는 가교 역할을 하고 있다”며 “연등숲과 거리연등, 장엄등, 제등행렬을 통해 시민들과 소통하고, APEC 원만성취와 모두의 평안을 기원하는 마음을 담고 있다”고 말했다.
류완하 동국대 WISE캠퍼스 총장은 이번 축제를 “지역과 함께 문화를 되살려 미래 세대에 전하는 중요한 행사”라고 강조하며, 학생들에게는 부처님의 가르침을 체험하고 지역 문화에 대한 봉사의 의미를 되새기는 시간이 되길 바란다고 전했다.
주낙영 경주시장은 “형산강 연등문화축제는 종교를 넘어 모든 시민이 함께 참여하고 즐길 수 있는 대표적인 문화축제”라며, “불교문화와 전통문화의 정수로서 과거와 현재, 미래를 잇는 소중한 문화유산으로 발전하길 바란다”고 말했다.
2025 형산강 연등문화축제는 동국대 WISE캠퍼스와 불국사, 경주불교사암연합회가 주관하며, 신라 시대의 연등회의 전통을 이어가고 있다.
이번 축제는 불기 2569(2025)년 부처님 오신 날을 봉축하기 위해 마련되었으며, 4월 26일까지 형산강 금장대 앞에서 장엄등 전시, 감성 포토존, 연등 플로깅, 연등 페스타(버스킹 공연) 등 다채로운 행사가 펼쳐진다. 5월 11일까지는 연등숲과 거리연등이 전시된다.

Dongguk University WISE Campus held a grand opening ceremony for the '2025 Hyeongsan River Lantern Festival' in front of the Geumjangdae in Hyeongsan River, Gyeongju on April 24.

In the Lantern Parade, 11 magnificent lanterns provided by Bulguksa Temple of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism and Jinkak Order of Korean Buddhism were displayed, and many citizens and tourists admired their beauty, took pictures, or waved their hands to greet them. They actively participated in the event by putting their hands together or bowing to the magnificent lanterns.
Dongguk University Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Monk Don-gwan, said, “Dongguk University is serving as a bridge to continue the thousand-year-old Buddhist culture into the modern era through the festival,” and “Through the Lantern Forest, street lanterns, magnificent lanterns, and the Lantern Parade, we communicate with citizens and wish for the smooth achievement of APEC and peace for all.”
Ryu Wan-ha, president of Dongguk University WISE Campus, emphasized that this festival is “an important event that revives culture with the region and passes it on to future generations,” and expressed his hope that students will have a time to experience the teachings of Buddha and reflect on the meaning of serving the local culture.
