케네디 대통령은 노벨상 수상자들을 대상으로 백악관에서 만찬을 벌였었는데, 펄 벅 앞에서 주한미군 이야기를 하면서, "주한미군에 너무나도 막대한 세금이 들어가고 있으며, 따라서 옛날처럼 일본이 한국을 지배 통치했으면 좋겠다."는 생각을 입으로 말했다. 그러자 펄 벅은 "그것은 마치 미국이 옛날 영국의 식민지로 돌아가자는 말과 같은 말"이라면서 강하게 반박하여 생각을 바꾸게 하였다고 전해진다.
노벨 문학상 대지의 작가 펄퍽 여사는 유 일환 회장과 인연으로 1960년 한국을 방문한다. 여행기간에 늦게까지 따지 않은 감을 보고 “저 감을 왜 따지 않았나요? ”라고 묻자 “저것은 겨울에 새들이 먹으라고 남겨둔 까치밥입니다”라는 답변을 듣고 그는 감동하였다. “바로 이거예요, 내가 한국에서 보고자 했던 것은 고적이나 왕궁이 아니에요. 이것 하나만으로 한국에 잘 왔다고 생각해요.”
또 한 번은 시골을 방문하던 중 시골 노인이 소달구지에 볏단을 싣고 가면서 자신의 지게에 볏단을 진채 걸어가는 모습을 보며 묻는다. ‘“왜 소달구지를 타고 가지 않고 저렇게 짐을 지고 가나요?” 라고 묻자 농부는 ‘오늘 우리 소가 일을 많이 하고 고생하였으니 내가 짐을 나눠지고 가는 겁니다. ‘
미국으로 돌아간 펄벅 여사는 “내가 세상에서 본 가장 아름다운 모습이었습니다. 미국의 농부라면 볏단을 다 싣고 본인도 달구지에 타고 가는 것이 당연하지만 한국의 농부는 수고한 짐승의 짐을 덜어주고자 자신의 지게에 볏단을 지고 가는 것을 보며 저는 온몸에 전율을 느꼈습니다.”라고 극찬을 하였다
그는 한국의 구한말 역사소설로 집필한 ‘살아있는 갈대’에서 “한국은 고상한 국민이 살고 있는 보석 같은 나라다.” 라며 한국에 대한 애정과 찬사로 시작한다. 불과 칠십여 년 전에 한국은 그러한 나라였다. 힘들고 어려워도 하늘과 땅, 자연을 사랑하고 공경하며 더불어 사는 아름다운 사람들이 살아가고 있는 아름다운 나라였다.

소설의 제목처럼 하나의 갈대가 부러져도 수십 개의 갈대로 다시 태어나고 부러지지 않고, 바람이 불 때마다 누웠다 다시 일어서며 푸른 생명을 이어가는 우리 민족이었기에 수없이 많은 어려움을 겪고 꺾여도 갈대 같은 민중이 다시 온몸을 던져 되살려낸다. 지도자들의 무능과 타락으로 버려진 내 나라의 모든 순간을 그렇게 지켜왔다.
문득 네덜란드 암스테르담 콘세르트헤바우에서 올해 5월에 “말러 페스티발”이 열린다는 소식을 들으면서 우리 민족의 아름다운 항쟁의 시간들을 같이 느껴본다. 1920년에 첫 개최이후 105년 만에 3번째 열리는 페스티발이라고 한다.
아마도 말러의 모든 교향곡을 통틀어서 가장 대중적으로 널리 알려진 곡을 꼽으라면 역시 5번 4악장 아다지에토일 것이다. 오직 현악기와 하프로만 연주되는 매우 아름다운 악장이다.
최근 박찬욱 감독의 ‘헤어질 결심’ 등 많은 영화 배경음악으로 사용되었고 미국 로버트 케네디 상원의원 장례 음악으로도 사용되는 등 허무한 삶의 아픔이 담긴 듯, 그러나 절망에서도 또 살아질 수 있다는 한 호흡의 감정을 잡아낸 것 같은, 순간 속 스러지는 봄날 꽃잎처럼 모든 것이 아스라이 흩어져 버리는 인간의 감정을 연주해 주는 듯하다.
나는 우리 민족의 민중처럼 일렁이는 강물에 제 몸을 부딪어 사각대는 갈대. 부러지고 쓰러져도 다시 강물을 정화시키며 푸르른 아름다움을 만들어 내는 갈대숲의 소리와 닮은 대자연의 숨결 소리를 듣는다.

지난밤 지네가 발가락을 물고 지나갔다. 아직 옅은 추위에 마른기침이 나오고 여명의 시간에 깊은 상념에 잠을 이루지 못하는 비몽사몽 속에 문득 공허한 소리가 메아리쳐 온다.
