필자는 올해로 기자생활 52년째이다. 주류 언론이 아닌, 주간신문-인터넷신문 등등의 비주류 언론에서만 줄곧 일해 왔다. 기자-언론인 생활을 해오면서, 내 나름대로 ‘스승’으로 생각했던 분이 오소백(1921-2008) 언론인이셨다.

1976년, 필자가 월간잡지 기자가 됐을 때, 오소백 언론인의 저서 “’기자가 되려면’ ‘매스컴 취재와 보도의 실제’”라는 등의 책을 읽어가며, 스스로 기자수업을 했었다.
7월1일 오후 이정옥 신문방송학 박사(전 KBS 파리 특파원. 전 한국 방송협회 사무총장, 전 KBS 글로벌 전략 센터장. 칼럼니스트. 저서로 ‘여자특파원 국경을 넘다’가 있다)께서 필자(문일석)가 인터뷰 했던, 오소백 언론인(일요서울 1994년 1월19일자. 단행본 ‘영원한 사회부장 오소백’ 424-427쪽 재수록)과 관련된 글의 복사본을 보내왔다. 깜짝 놀랐다.
이 인터뷰 글 가운데, 아래와 같은 대목에서 눈길이 멈췄다. 오소백 언론인의 육성(肉聲), 전달문이다.
“신문을 엄숙한 직업으로 믿는 언론인은 끝내 평민적인 자세를 지녀야 하며, 영원히 야(野)적이어야 합니다. 참다운 기자는 정치꾼이 아닙니다. 올곧은 기자는 장사꾼이 아닙니다. 올바른 기자는 막노동꾼이 아닙니다. 생각 깊은 기자는 이념-선동꾼이 아닙니다. 기자는 오직 앞날을 깊이 생각하고 걱정하는 일꾼입니다. 기자는 사회의 교사(敎師)입니다.“

필자는 지난 2024년 4월2일자 브레이크뉴스에 “언론인 오소백...사실만을 기록해온 필자의 기자인생에 만난 '영원한 스승’”이라는 제목의 글을 게재했다.
이 글에서 “필자는 ‘영원한 사회부장’이라고 불리었던 오소백(1921~2008) 언론인(서울언론인클럽 전 회장)을 통해서 기자수업을 받으면서, 기자생활을 지속했었다. 그분의 강의를 직접 들었고, 그 분이 쓴 매스컴 관련 책들(‘기자가 되려면’ ‘매스컴 취재와 보도의 실제’ 등)을 탐독하면서, 기자직에 대해서 배우고 행동했다.”고 쓰고 “1976년 여름, 경포대 해변에서 가졌던 기자 여름학교에서 만난 이후 2008년 작고하실 때까지 교유를 지속했었다. 그 분은 오랜 기간 서울언론인클럽의 회장이었는데, 필자에게 이 단체에 가입하기를 권유, 필자는 이 권유를 받아들여 서울언론인클럽의 회원으로 활동하기도 했다.”고 전했었다.

월간 ‘신문과 방송’ 2008년 11월호에 기고된 박용규 전 상지대 교수의 글(제목=언론인 양성에 앞장 선 영원한 사회부장)에 따르면, 오소백 언론인은 ‘영원한 사회부장’으로 불리었다.
박용규 교수는 이 글에서 “오소백을 흔히 ‘영원한 사회부장’이라고 부른다. 이는 그가 여러 신문에서 사회부장을 지냈기 때문이다. 그는 일선 기자, 데스크 시절을 모두 사회부에서만 보내며 한국 현대사의 중요한 현장을 충실히 기록하려고 애썼다. 또한 언론사적으로 중요한 사건들의 한복판에서 활동하기도 했다. 당연히 그의 사회부장으로서의 활동은 매우 의미가 크고, 이런 활동들을 반드시 살펴볼 필요가 있다. 하지만 그의 사회부장 경력은 아무리 길게 잡아도 15년을 채 넘지 못한다”면서 “반면 그의 언론학 교재 집필이나 언론학 교육 경력은 40여 년에 걸쳐 계속됐다. 본인 스스로 조선신문학원에서 언론인 양성 교육을 받았고, 언론인이 된 지 불과 7년 뒤부터는 대학에 나가 언론인 양성을 위한 교육에 앞장서기도 했다. 과거에 신문방송학과를 나온 사람치고 그의 책을 안 본 사람은 그리 많지 않을 것”이라고 기록했다.
이정옥 박사(신문방송학)로 인해, 잊고 살았던 오소백 언론인을 떠올리게 됐다.
오소백 언론인, 그분이 필자와의 인터뷰에서 언급한 “신문을 엄숙한 직업으로 믿는 언론인은 끝내 평민적인 자세를 지녀야 하며, 영원히 야(野)적이어야 합니다.“는 말이 울림이 되어, 되돌아왔다. moonilsuk@naver.com

This is my 52nd year as a journalist. I have always worked in non-mainstream media such as weekly newspapers and internet newspapers, not mainstream media. While working as a journalist, the person I considered my ‘teacher’ was journalist Oh So-baek (1921-2008).
In 1976, when I became a journalist for a monthly magazine, I taught myself how to be a journalist by reading books by journalist Oh So-baek such as “To Become a Journalist” and “The Reality of Media Coverage and Reporting.” On the afternoon of July 1, Dr. Lee Jeong-ok, a PhD in Journalism and Broadcasting (former KBS Paris correspondent, former Secretary General of the Korean Broadcasting Association, former Director of the KBS Global Strategy Center, columnist, author of ‘Women Correspondents Cross Borders’) sent me a copy of an article about journalist Oh So-baek (published in Sunday Seoul, January 19, 1994, in the volume ‘Eternal Social Affairs Editor Oh So-baek’, pp. 424-427) that I (Moon Il-seok) had interviewed. I was surprised.
Among the interview articles, my eyes stopped at the following passage. This is journalist Oh So-baek’s voice, a message. “Journalists who believe that journalism is a serious profession must maintain a commoner’s attitude and be forever wild. A true journalist is not a politician. An upright journalist is not a businessman. A proper journalist is not a day laborer. A thoughtful journalist is not an ideologue or agitator. A journalist is only a worker who thinks deeply about the future and worries about it. A journalist is a teacher of society.”
On April 2, 2024, the author published an article titled “Journalist Oh So-baek... The ‘eternal teacher’ I met in my journalistic life of recording only facts” in the Break News. In this article, the author wrote, “I continued my career as a journalist while receiving training as a journalist from Oh So-baek (1921-2008), a journalist who was called the ‘Eternal Social Affairs Editor’ (former president of the Seoul Journalists Club). I attended his lectures directly, and while reading books on mass communication written by him (‘To Become a Journalist’, ‘The Reality of Mass Communication Coverage and Reporting’, etc.), I learned about the profession of a journalist and acted accordingly.” He also said, “We met at a summer school for journalists held at Gyeongpodae Beach in the summer of 1976 and maintained a relationship until his death in 2008. He was the president of the Seoul Journalists Club for a long time and recommended that I join the organization. I accepted this recommendation and became a member of the Seoul Journalists Club.” According to an article by former Sangji University professor Park Yong-gyu (title: Eternal social affairs editor who took the lead in nurturing journalists) in the November 2008 issue of the monthly magazine ‘Newspaper and Broadcasting,’ journalist Oh So-baek was called the ‘eternal social affairs editor.’ Professor Park Yong-gyu wrote in this article, “Oh So-baek is often called the ‘eternal social affairs editor.’ This is because he served as the social affairs editor for several newspapers. He spent all his time as a frontline reporter and desk reporter in the social affairs editorial department, and tried to faithfully record important scenes in modern Korean history. He also worked in the midst of important events in the history of journalism. Naturally, his activities as the social affairs editor are very meaningful, and these activities must be examined. However, his career as the social affairs editor does not exceed 15 years at most.” He added, “On the other hand, his career as a journalist and as a journalist education writer lasted for over 40 years. He himself received training as a journalist at the Chosun Ilbo Academy, and only 7 years after becoming a journalist, he went to college and took the lead in education for journalists. There probably aren’t many people who graduated from the Department of Journalism and Broadcasting who haven’t read his books.” Because of Dr. Lee Jeong-ok (Journalism and Broadcasting), I was reminded of Oh So-baek, a journalist I had forgotten. Journalist Oh So-baek, the words he mentioned in his interview with me, “Journalists who believe that newspapers are a serious profession must maintain a commoner’s attitude and be forever wild,” resonated with me and came back to me.
