가장 ‘민주적인’ 스포츠가 야구다. 모든 선수에게 균등한 타격 기회가 주어진다.
올해 시카고 컵스가 잘하고 있다. 컵스는 페이롤이 그리 크지 않음에도 불구하고 2025년 시즌 중반인 현재 매우 높은 득점력을 보여주고 있다. 지난 해에 비해 엄청난 반전인 것이다. 높은 득점력 배경엔 도루가 있다. 크레이그 카운셀 감독은 베이스러닝을 강조한다. 그는 김병현 선수가 아리조나 다이아몬드 백에서 뛸 때 유격수를 맡았던 두뇌형 선수다. 고교 대학 시절 공부를 잘했다고 한다. 카운셀은 영리한 베이스러닝을 위해 비디오를 활용, 선수의 실수들을 정학히 분석한다. 그리고 토론을 통해 팀원들 간의 유대감을 강화하고, 각 선수에게 책임감을 부여한다. 지금 컵스는 베이스러닝을 가장 잘하는 팀 중에 하나다.
