The Office of the President stated on the 15th regarding the request by the Democratic Party of Korea's National Assembly Legislation and Judiciary Committee Chairwoman Choo Mi-ae for the public resignation of Chief Justice Cho Hee-dae, "It is only intended to respect the National Assembly's deliberation."
Spokesperson Kang Yoo-jung issued a statement immediately following the Yongsan Blue House briefing that morning, stating, "The Blue House's position is that the National Assembly, through deliberation and discussion, must prioritize reflecting the spirit of the Constitution and the demands of the people. If such demands are borne of the times and the people, then, as the appointed authority, it is necessary to reflect on the reasons for such demands."
However, in an earlier briefing that day, she stated, "We have no specific position. We agree in principle that, if there are demands borne of the times and the people, then, as the appointed authority, it is necessary to reflect on the plausibility and reasons for such demands."
While initially supporting the Democratic Party's call for Chief Justice Cho's resignation, the Blue House has now backed down in anticipation of controversy.
