6·25 전쟁 초기에 부상당한 미군을 숨죽여 돌본 세종시민의 선행이 75년 만에 국제적인 평가를 받았다.
세종시는 금남면 거주 임창수 옹(91)이 지난 17일 서울 웨스틴조선호텔에서 열린 제25-1차 한미동맹컨퍼런스에서 미 정부로부터 ‘인도주의 봉사상’을, 그리고 한미연합사령관 명의의 감사장을 수상했다고 23일 밝혔다.
임 옹은 전쟁 당시 공주중학교 학생 신분으로 금남면 영대리에서 지내던 중, 금강 전투에서 발을 다치고 후퇴하던 미군 랠프 킬패트릭 상사를 발견했다. 당시 27세였던 킬패트릭 상사를 위해 그는 77일간 매일 식사를 챙기고 치료를 도우며 목숨을 건 보호를 이어갔다.
