미국 백악관이 2일(현지시간) 민주당 성향 연방 정부 '셧 다운(일시적 업무 정지)' 사태 관련해 "민주당은 지역구 주민들에 더 큰 피해가 가는 걸 원차 않는다면 정부를 재개해야 한다"고 밝혔다.
미 '폭스 뉴스'에 따르면 캐롤라인 레빗 대변인은 이날 '폭스' 인터뷰에서 "민주당은 자신들이 백악관·(트럼프) 대통령을 이런 상황에 몰아넣었다는 것을 알아야 한다"며 이같이 말했다.
그러면서 '도널드 트럼프 대통령의 정부 조직·프로그램 삭감 예고가 단순 협상 전술인가'란 질의에 "매우 진짜이고, 매우 간단하다"며 "조건 없는 임시예산안을 통과시키면 모든 문제가 사라진다"고 답했다.
이어 "이는 불행한 결과"라며 "(트럼프) 대통령·러셀 보트 백악관 예산관리국(OMB) 국장은 오늘 늦은 시간 회의할 예정"이라고 덧붙였다.
또 이날 백악관 밖에서 취재진과 만나 "당국이 이미 대량 해고 가능성 대비 시뮬레이션을 진행 중이며 규모는 수천 명 정도 될 것"이라며 "민주당이 정부를 정상 운영하는 데 동의했다면 이런 논의는 필요 없었을 것"이라고 지적했다.
민주당 성향 미 연방 정부는 의회가 새 회계연도 예산안 합의에 실패하면서 지난 1일 0시 1분(현지시간)부터 '셧 다운'에 돌입한 가운데 백악관이 사태가 지속될 경우 직원 대량 해고 사태가 일어날 수 있다며 경고하고 나선 것이다.
앞서 이날 도널드 트럼프 대통령도 자신의 트루스소셜에 "보트 OMB 국장과 만나 민주당 핵심 프로그램 예산을 어떤 방식으로 삭감할지, 그 조치가 일시적·영구적일지 논의할 것"이라며 "급진 좌파 민주당이 내게 이런 전례 없는 기회를 줬다는 게 믿기지 않는다"고 밝혔다.
또 "그들(민주당)이 멍청한 사람들이 아니니 어쩌면 조용히 신속히 '미국을 다시 위대하게(MAGA)' 만들고 싶어 하는 것일지도 모른다"고 덧붙였다.
