민희정 교수는 최근 학교 현장에서 관계 단절, 충동조절의 어려움, 우울과 불안 등 정서적 문제가 심화되는 상황을 지적하며, 이러한 문제 해결을 위한 새로운 접근법으로 ‘RISEL’을 제시했다. 이와 함께 초·중등 학생을 위한 워크북과 교사용 지도서도 함께 선보였다.
‘RISEL’은 관계성과 상호연결성을 중심에 둔 놀이 기반·경험 중심형 명상교육으로, 사회정서교육(SEL)과 인성교육을 통합한 ‘SEE Learning(씨러닝)’에 한국 전통의 관계 중심 철학을 더해 설계된 것이 특징이다.
교육과정은 △초등 저학년용 ‘마(음의)숲 탐험대’, △고학년용 ‘마음 항해 일지’, △중학생용 ‘내 안의 _____이(가) 반짝일 때(The Shining within)’ 등 세 가지 단계로 구성됐다. 각 프로그램은 자기이해·타인이해·자기관리·관계관리·공동체 의식·회복탄력성 등을 함양하도록 설계됐다.
특히 초등 고학년용 ‘마음 항해 일지’는 오는 2025년 8월 서울시교육청 사회정서교육 우수자료로 선정돼 서울시 관내 교원들에게 배포될 예정이며, 공교육 현장에서의 활용 가능성을 입증했다.
민 교수는 “명상은 개인의 내면을 다스리는 수단을 넘어, 교실과 공동체 안에서 서로를 이해하고 연결하는 새로운 교육 언어가 될 것”이라며 “RISEL을 통해 마음의 회복과 관계의 회복이 함께 이루어질 때, 우리 사회의 정서적 생태가 긍정적으로 변화할 것”이라고 강조했다.
프로그램에 참여한 학생들은 “명상은 인생의 쉬는 시간 같다”, “이제는 스스로 마음을 다스릴 용기가 생겼다”, “친구를 보는 시선이 달라졌다” 등 긍정적인 반응을 보였다.
한편, 동국대 WISE캠퍼스 아동인성교육연구소는 향후 서울시교육청을 비롯한 전국 교육청 및 교사들과 협력해 교육과정 확산을 추진할 계획이다. 내년부터는 전국 초·중등 교원을 대상으로 한 교사 연수와 학교 적용 연구도 단계적으로 확대할 예정이다.

The Child Character Education Research Institute (Director Professor Min Hee-jung) at Dongguk University WISE Campus (President Ryu Wan-ha) has unveiled "Relational-Integrated Social-Emotional Learning (RISEL)," a Korean-style social-emotional education program that combines meditation-based mental and relationship restoration.
Professor Min Hee-jung recently highlighted the growing prevalence of emotional problems in schools, including disconnected relationships, impulse control difficulties, depression, and anxiety, and proposed "RISEL" as a new approach to addressing these issues. She also released a workbook for elementary and middle school students and a teacher's guide.
"RISEL" is a play-based, experience-based meditation program centered on relationships and interconnectedness. It combines "SEE Learning," which integrates social-emotional education (SEL) and character education, with the traditional Korean philosophy of focusing on relationships.
The curriculum consists of three stages: "Ma (Eum) Forest Exploration" for lower elementary school students, "Mind Voyage Journal" for upper elementary school students, and "The Shining Within" for middle school students. Each program is designed to foster self-understanding, understanding others, self-management, relationship management, a sense of community, and resilience.
Notably, "Mind Voyage Journal" for upper elementary school students was selected as an excellent resource for social and emotional education by the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education in August 2025 and will be distributed to teachers in Seoul, demonstrating its potential for use in public education settings.
Professor Min emphasized, "Meditation will go beyond a means of managing one's inner self to become a new educational language for understanding and connecting with one another in the classroom and community." He emphasized, "When mental and relationship restoration are achieved together through RISEL, the emotional ecology of our society will undergo positive changes."
Students who participated in the program responded positively, saying, "Meditation is like a break from life," "I now have the courage to control my mind," and "My perspective on my friends has changed."
Meanwhile, the Dongguk University WISE Campus Child Character Education Research Institute plans to collaborate with the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education and other education offices and teachers nationwide to expand the curriculum. Starting next year, teacher training and school application research for elementary and secondary school teachers nationwide will also be gradually expanded.
