이 사업은 농업인의 농번기 식사 준비 부담을 줄이고, 영농에 지속적으로 종사해 건강한 농촌 환경을 조성하는 데 목적을 두고 있다. 농번기에 마을 단위로 급식소를 운영할 수 있도록 식재료비와 급식 도우미 인건비를 지원한다.
이를 통해 농업인이 한끼 식사 걱정 없이 농작업에 집중할 수 있도록 해 여성농업인의 가사 부담 경감하고 마을공동체 활성화에도 긍정적인 효과를 내고 있다.
군은 2023년 10개 마을에서 사업을 시작해 2024년 20개 마을로 사업을 늘렸으며, 2025년에는 더욱 확대해 38개 마을에서 농업인 공동급식소를 운영했다.
지원 대상은 15인 이상이 함께 식사를 할 수 있고, 급식이 가능한 시설을 갖춘 마을이다.
각 마을은 농번기 내 자율적으로 급식일을 정해 운영하며, 군은 마을별로 식재료비와 급식도우미 인건비를 예산의 범위 내에서 지원했다.
이를 통해 올해 참여 마을의 농업인들은 농번기 식사 준비 부담을 덜고, 농작업에 더욱 전념할 수 있는 환경을 마련했다.
