거의 30년 전, 비슷한 사건이 하나 있었다. 빌 클린턴이 재임하던 당시 백악관 인턴이었던 모니카 르윈스키(Monica Lewinsky)와의 불륜 스캔들이다. 르윈스키는 펜타곤의 공보직으로 근무하는 동료 린다 트립과 전화 통화를 하면서 클린턴과의 관계를 허물없이 털어놨는데, 린다가 이 내용을 녹음하고 언론에 공개하면서 시작되었다.
미국사에 길이 남을 전대미문의 추문의 당사자가 된 당시 클린턴 대통령은 법정에서 위증 및 위증 교사까지 하면서 케네스 스타 특별 검사에게 패배하고, 하원에서 탄핵 의결이 통과되어 벼랑 끝까지 몰리게 되었다. 당시 공화당이 장악한 하원에서 탄핵안이 통과되면서 클린턴 행정부는 완전히 절체절명의 상황에 놓였다. 그러나 상원에서 탄핵안이 부결되면서 가까스로 클린턴은 대통령 자리는 지켰다.
당시 이와 같은 추한 지퍼게이트를 덮기 위해 클린턴이 했던 행위가 "코소보 전쟁" 당시 세르비아에 대한 무자비한 폭격이었다. 1999년 3월 24일부터 6월 10일까지 유고슬라비아 연방공화국 전역에 걸쳐 폭격을 자행했다.
1994년부터 2004년까지 제프리 엡스타인이 미성년자를 대상으로 성범죄를 벌였다. 제프리 엡스타인은 1994년부터 2004년까지 본인이 소유한 미국령 버진 아일랜드 리틀 세인트 제임스 섬으로 미성년자들을 데려와 성노예로 착취하였는데 섬 곳곳에 몰래카메라를 설치해 놓았고 권력자들에게 미성년자들을 약점을 틀어쥐려고 했다. 당시 부동산 사업가이자 리얼리티쇼 진행자였던 도널드 트럼프가 엡스타인에 대해 다음과 같이 평가했다.
"He's a lot of fun to be with. It is even said that he likes beautiful women as much as I do, and many of them are on the younger side. No doubt about it - Jeffrey enjoys his social life. (함께 있으면 정말 즐거운 사람이지요. 심지어 저와 마찬가지로 아름다운 여성을 좋아한다고 하는데, 그중 상당수가 어린 편이랍니다. 제프리가 사교생활을 즐긴다는 건 의심의 여지가 없습니다)."
2019년 8월 10일 오전 6시 30분경, 제프리 엡스타인이 뉴욕주 광역 교정 시설의 독방에서 침대 난간에 목을 매달아 숨진 채 발견되었다. 정작 십수 년간 트럼프와 엡스타인이 친근하게 찍힌 사진이 여럿 존재하고 있다. 월스트리트 저널은 트럼프가 엡스타인에게 음란한 그림이 그려진 편지를 보냈다고 2025년 7월 보도했다. 그리고 2025년 6월 5일, 장관에서 물러난 뒤 SNS에서 트럼프와 설전을 벌이던 일론 머스크가 "진짜 큰 폭탄을 떨어뜨릴 시간"이라며 "트럼프는 엡스타인 파일에 이름이 들어있다. 그게 그 문서들이 공개되지 않는 진짜 이유다"고 주장했다.
2025년 7월 8일, 전월부터 트럼프 연루 의혹이 불거지자 팸 본디 법무장관은 엡스타인과의 관련된 의혹이 사실이 아니라며 소위 엡스타인 파일을 공개하지 않겠다고 선언했는데, 이는 자기 책상 위에 있다던 지난 3월의 발언을 뒤집었던데다 이 때 함께 감옥 CCTV '원본' 영상이라며 제시한 파일에 편집한 흔적이 역력해 논란에 불을 지폈다.
이같은 옙스타인 성범죄 연루 의혹을 덮기 위해 트럼프는 베네수엘라 폭격과 마두로 납치를 지시했다. 다만 클린턴 때와 다른 것이 있다면 무자비한 폭격으로 유고슬라비아를 작살낸 것과 나름 심플하게 마두로와 그의 부인만 체포해갔다는 것이다. 전체적인 맥락으로 볼 때 참 유사하지 않은가? 국제 정치와 국제 관계에서 가장 무서운 것은 선례(Precedent)인데 트럼프는 국제 관계에 있어 가장 무서운 선례를 남겨 놓았다. 이제 미국은 러시아에게 우크라이나를 침공하면서 국제법을 위반했다며 비난할 명분이 사라지게 되었고, 중국은 이같은 선례를 바탕으로 대만에 진입하여 라이칭더 총통만 체포해 갈 수 있는 옵션만 하나 더 만들어 놓게 되었다. 이와 똑같이 미국도 했으니 중국도 할 수 있다는 얘기다. 그리고 그와 비슷한 식으로 중국이 응용하여 우리 대한민국에게도 중대한 피해를 끼칠 수 있다는 것이 무서운 점이다. lukybaby7@gmail.com

President Clinton, who was at the center of an unprecedented scandal that would go down in American history, perjured himself and even incited perjury in court. He was defeated by Special Counsel Kenneth Starr, and the House of Representatives passed an impeachment vote, pushing him to the brink of collapse. The impeachment vote in the then-Republican-controlled House left the Clinton administration in a desperate situation. However, the Senate acquitted Clinton, narrowly preserving his presidency.
Clinton's attempt to cover up this ugly Zippergate scandal at the time was the merciless bombing of Serbia during the "Kosovo War." From March 24 to June 10, 1999, bombings were carried out across the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia.
From 1994 to 2004, Jeffrey Epstein sexually abused minors. The only difference from the Clinton era is that they ruthlessly bombed Yugoslavia and simply arrested Maduro and his wife. Isn't this a striking resemblance? The most frightening thing in international politics and international relations is precedent, and Trump has set the most frightening precedent in international relations. The US now has no justification for accusing Russia of violating international law by invading Ukraine, and China, using this precedent, has the option of entering Taiwan and arresting President Lai Ching-te alone.
