이는 이번 6·3 지방선거에서 민주당 경북도당의 첫 공천 사례로, 당 차원에서 박 후보의 경쟁력과 확장성을 높이 평가한 결과로 풀이된다.
박 후보는 “포항은 변화가 필요하다”며 “시민의 일상과 안전, 지역경제 회복을 최우선으로 하는 ‘현장형 시정’으로 포항의 다음 10년을 준비하겠다”고 밝혔다. 이어 “가장 먼저 공천이 확정된 만큼 정부·여당과의 협력을 통한 정책 추진으로 승부하겠다”고 강조했다.

국민의힘 이칠구 포항시장 예비후보는 원도심 활성화를 핵심으로 한 경제 공약을 제시했다. 이 예비후보는 16일 보도자료를 통해 ‘원도심 상권 활성화 프로젝트’를 추진하겠다고 밝히고, 죽도시장과 중앙상가 일대의 접근성 개선을 통한 상권 회복 방안을 내놓았다.
그는 주차난 해소를 최우선 과제로 제시하며 죽도시장 일대에 단계별 공영 주차타워 확충과 입체식 주차장 조성을 추진하고, 중앙상가에는 대규모 공영주차장과 스마트 주차 안내 시스템을 도입하겠다고 밝혔다. 아울러 노후 상가 외관 개선과 보행환경 정비, 디지털 기반 스마트 상권 인프라 구축 등을 통해 시민과 관광객이 머무는 도심 환경을 만들겠다는 구상도 함께 제시했다.

이와 함께 공원식 포항시장 예비후보(국민의힘)는 청년층을 중심으로 한 지지세 확산에 나섰다. 지난 16일 선거사무실에서는 포항에 거주하는 청년 518명이 지지선언을 했으며, 50여 명의 청년들이 참석한 간담회도 함께 열렸다.
