한국의 국가대표는 야구도 축구도 매번 ‘경우의 수’를 따진다. 월드베이스볼클래식(WBC)에서 한국 야구는 어렵게 ‘경우의 수’를 통과해 8강에 올랐다. 하지만 막상 8강전에서 도미니카공화국에게 10대0 콜드게임 패배를 당했다. 한국 팬들에게는 충격이 아닐 수 없다. 어렵게 올라간 무대에서 단 한 번의 반격도 하지 못하고 경기가 끝나버렸기 때문이다.
뼈있는 말을 한마디 하자면 한국 야구가 8강에 오른 것만으로도 대단한 업적이다. 한국 야구의 제도적 미성숙과 열악한 인프라를 감안해보면 1승이라도 한 게 참 대견할 수밖에 없다. 야구는 스포츠일 뿐이다. 지금 국민의힘의 모습을 보면, 다가올 지방선거에서 비슷한 장면이 정치판에서 재연될 가능성이 점점 커 보인다. 준비되지 않은 팀이 강팀을 만나면 어떤 일이 벌어지는지 우리는 이미 야구장에서 목격했다.
스포츠도 게임이지만, 정치도 게임이다. 다만 차이가 있다면 스포츠는 패배해도 팬들이 다음 시즌을 기다리면 되지만, 정치의 패배는 국민 전체에게 비용이 돌아온다는 점이다. 특히 한국 보수가 ‘콜드게임’ 완패를 당하면 한국 체제에 붕괴 위기가 닥친다. 그렇기에 한국 보수는 더 치밀하고 더 준비된 시스템이 필요하다.
지금 국민의힘은 그 기본적인 시스템, 즉 정치의 제도 인프라가 무너진 상태처럼 보인다. 최근 벌어진 일만 보더라도 그렇다. 공천 과정에서 잡음이 끊이지 않고, 이정현 공천관리위원장은 돌연 사퇴했다가 다시 복귀하는 촌극을 연출했다. 서울에서는 오세훈 시장이 공천 문제에 반발하며 당과 갈등을 드러냈고, 충북에서는 현역 지사 김영환이 공천 컷 오프되며 논란이 확산되는 중이다. 정당이 선거를 앞두고 가장 중요한 시기에 보여준 모습이 전략도 조직도 없는 혼란이라면, 그것은 이미 경기 시작 전에 패배를 예약한 것과 다름없다.
이 모습은 한국 야구가 오랫동안 지적받아온 문제와도 닮아있다. 한국 야구가 국제대회에서 흔들리는 가장 큰 이유는 단순히 선수들의 실력이 부족해서가 아니다. 선수층이 얇고 시스템이 약하기 때문이다. 유소년 육성, 리그 구조, 데이터 분석, 투수 관리 같은 인프라가 부족하면 어느 순간 한계가 드러난다. 단적으로 말하자. 미국엔 야구부 없는 대학과 고등학교가 거의 없다. 한국엔 야구부 있는 대학과 고등학교가 매우 드물다.
정치도 마찬가지다. 정당이 건강하려면 인재를 키우는 시스템, 공정한 경쟁 구조, 전략적 리더십이라는 인프라가 있어야 한다. 그러나 지금 국민의힘에서는 그 대신 ‘역 선택’과 내부 권력 게임이 인재 선발을 대신하는 듯하다.
야구팀으로 비유하자면 이렇다. 무능한 감독과 코치는 무능한 선수를 선호할 수밖에 없다. 자신이 무능하기 때문이다. 정치도 명분은 거창할지 몰라도 사람들이 하는 것이다. 따라서 원리는 비슷하다. 경제와 정책에 대한 식견을 갖고 있고, 비교적 청렴한 이미지를 가진 정치인이 있다면 그 사람을 중심으로 팀을 강화해야 한다. 그런데 오히려 그런 인물이 내부 권력 구조에 위협이 된다는 이유로 경기장 밖으로 밀려나는 일이 반복된다. 국민의힘이 딱 그렇다.
이것은 전략이 아니라 자기 파괴적 조직 행동이다. 문제는 이런 구조에서는 선거에서 이기기 어렵다는 것이다. 선거는 감정이 아니라 조직과 전략의 싸움이기 때문이다. 야구에서 강팀이 되는 방법은 단순하다. 좋은 선수를 쓰고, 데이터로 전략을 짜고, 시스템으로 팀을 운영하는 것이다.
하지만 지금 국민의힘은 정반대 방향으로 가는 듯하다. 좋은 선수를 배제하고, 전략 대신 파벌을 택하고, 시스템 대신 즉흥적 결정을 반복한다. 그 결과는 이미 예고되어 있다. 경기 시작도 전에 내부에서 싸우는 팀이 상대 팀과 제대로 싸울 수 있을 리 없다. 선발 라인업이 정리되지 않은 채 경기를 시작하면, 결과는 대개 ‘7회 콜드게임’이 아니라 ‘5회 콜드게임’일 것이다. 이대로 가면 지방선거 개표함을 열 필요조차 없이 패배가 확정된다는 뜻이다.
스포츠에서는 패배를 통해 배우면 된다. 정치에서는 상황이 다르다. 특히 보수가 ‘콜드게임’ 패배를 당하면 국민들은 보수 정당에 기대를 접게 된다. 그나마 가뭄에 풀 나듯 한 지지를 거두게 되고 이는 곧 체제 붕괴로 이어진다. 지금 국민의힘 당권파가 매우 무책임한 이유다. yslee1992@hotmail.com

However, they suffered a 10-0 cold game defeat against the Dominican Republic in the quarterfinal match. This is nothing short of a shock to Korean fans. It is because the game ended without a single counterattack on the stage they had reached with such difficulty.
To make a pointed remark, the mere fact that Korean baseball reached the quarterfinals is a tremendous achievement. Considering the institutional immaturity and poor infrastructure of Korean baseball, securing even one win is something to be truly proud of. Baseball is just a sport. Looking at the current state of the People Power Party, the possibility that similar scenes will be reenacted in the political arena during the upcoming local elections seems increasingly likely. We have already witnessed on the baseball field what happens when an unprepared team faces a strong opponent. While sports are games, politics is also a game. However, the difference is that in sports, fans can simply look forward to the next season even if a party loses, whereas in politics, the cost falls on the entire nation. If infrastructure such as youth development, league structure, data analysis, and pitcher management is lacking, limitations will eventually become apparent. To put it bluntly: in the United States, there are almost no colleges or high schools without baseball teams. In Korea, however, colleges and high schools with baseball teams are very rare.
Politics is no different. For a political party to be healthy, it must possess infrastructure such as a system for nurturing talent, a fair competitive structure, and strategic leadership. However, in the People Power Party, it seems that "reverse selection" and internal power games are replacing talent selection in this regard.
To use a baseball team analogy, it is like this: an incompetent manager and coach have no choice but to prefer incompetent players. This is because they themselves are incompetent. Politics, too, may have grand justifications, but it is conducted by people. Therefore, the principle is similar. If there is a politician who possesses insight into the economy and policy and has a relatively clean image, the team should be strengthened around that person. However, instead, such figures are repeatedly pushed out of the field because they are seen as a threat to the internal power structure. The People Power Party is exactly like that.
This is not a strategy, but self-destructive organizational behavior. The problem is that it is difficult to win elections with such a structure. This is because elections are a battle of organization and strategy, not emotion. In baseball, the way to become a strong team is simple: use good players, formulate strategies based on data, and manage the team through a system.
However, the People Power Party currently seems to be heading in the exact opposite direction. They exclude good players, choose factions over strategy, and repeat impulsive decisions instead of a system. The result is already foreshadowed. A team fighting internally before the game even starts cannot possibly fight properly against the opposing team. If the game begins without a finalized starting lineup, the result will usually be a "5th-inning mercy rule" rather than a "7th-inning mercy rule." This means that if things continue this way, defeat will be confirmed without even needing to open the ballot boxes for the local elections.
In sports, one learns from defeat. The situation is different in politics. In particular, if the conservatives suffer a "merit rule" defeat, the public will give up hope on the conservative party. Withdrawing the meager support that barely sprouted like grass in a drought will inevitably lead to the collapse of the system. This is the reason why the ruling faction of the People Power Party is currently acting so irresponsibly.
