포항시는 17일 시청 소회의실에서 ‘포항에코빌리지’ 조성을 위한 폐기물처리시설 입지선정위원회를 공식 출범시키고 첫 회의를 열었다. 위원회는 주민대표, 전문가, 시의원, 공무원 등 18명으로 구성된 법정기구로 향후 입지 선정 전 과정을 주도한다.
특히 이번 사업은 기존 호동2매립장과 생활폐기물에너지화시설을 대체하는 대규모 프로젝트로, 향후 30년간 포항시 생활폐기물 처리의 기반이 되는 핵심 인프라라는 점에서 의미가 크다.

관건은 주민 수용성이다. 폐기물처리시설 특성상 입지 선정 과정에서 지역 주민 반발이 불가피한 만큼, 투명한 정보 공개와 공정한 절차가 요구된다.
포항시 관계자는 “환경성과 안전성을 최우선으로 고려하는 동시에 주민 의견을 충분히 반영하겠다”며 “갈등을 최소화하고 지역과 상생하는 친환경 시설로 조성하는 데 행정력을 집중할 것”이라고 밝혔다.
포항에코빌리지는 소각시설과 매립시설 등 6개 처리시설과 함께 주민편익시설을 포함한 복합 공간으로 조성될 예정으로, 단순한 폐기물 처리시설을 넘어 지역 생활 인프라로 기능할 수 있을지 주목된다.
