Mayor Kang Su-hyeon: “Gwangseok District is a Ready Site… Expecting Development for the Entire Northern Gyeonggi Region”… ‘100,000 Pan-Citizen Signature Campaign’ to Support the Bid Begins in Earnest
[Break News Northern Gyeonggi = Reporter Kim Wan-young] Yangju City, Gyeonggi Province, has embarked on a large-scale campaign to unite the will of its citizens to attract the Gwacheon Racecourse (LetsRun Park Seoul) to the Gwangseok District, the site designated by LH.
On the morning of the 23rd at 10:00 AM, the city held the inauguration ceremony and resolution rally for the ‘Yangju City Pan-Citizen Promotion Committee for Attracting Gwacheon Racecourse’ at the Gyeonggi Textile Support Center. Approximately 500 people attended the event, demonstrating the fervent enthusiasm for the bid. The attendees included co-chairs Yangju Mayor Kang Su-hyeon, Yangju City Council Chairman Yoon Chang-cheol, and Social Organizations Council Chairman Song In-ho, as well as vice-chairs such as the Vice Mayor of Yangju, 10 city and provincial council members, and citizen representatives from all walks of life.
The Pan-Citizens Promotion Committee was formed with a total of 471 members to systematically consolidate the voices of the citizens. To maximize operational expertise and efficiency, the committee was subdivided into six divisions—Social Organizations, Regional Development, Businesspeople, Regional Economy, Eup/Myeon/Dong, and Civic Groups—to enhance the effectiveness of the bid activities.
This inauguration ceremony holds special significance as it marks the first official organizational launch and large-scale event held by Yangju City since the announcement of the "Joint Declaration on the Bid for the Gwacheon Racecourse in Northern Gyeonggi" by the five cities and counties in the Gyeongwon region (Yangju, Uijeongbu, Pocheon, Dongducheon, and Yeoncheon) on March 17. In his commemorative address, Yangju Mayor Kang Su-hyeon emphasized, “The Gwangseok District features a flat terrain spanning 350,000 pyeong, similar to the site of the Gwacheon Racecourse. In particular, it is a ‘ready site’ where the project can begin immediately, as the Korea Land and Housing Corporation (LH) has completed land compensation.”
Song In-ho, Chairman of the Yangju Social Organizations Council, stated, “Attracting the Gwacheon Equestrian Park to Yangju is a major task that must be accomplished together, regardless of party affiliation. This is a way for central politicians to repay the citizens for the development of Yangju. I ask the attendees to applaud Representative Jeong Seong-ho, who was unable to attend due to his busy schedule as a Cabinet member, to take the lead.”
He continued, “Attracting the racecourse is a great opportunity to lead the development of the northern Gyeonggi region,” adding, “The residents of northern Gyeonggi, who have endured extraordinary sacrifices for national security for over 70 years, now deserve ‘special compensation.’ We look forward to a resurgence of the northern Gyeonggi economy through the attraction of the Gwangseok District.” Starting with the launch ceremony held on this day, Yangju City has officially launched the "100,000-Signature Campaign for the Attraction of Gwacheon Racecourse." The city plans to gather citizens' voices through online and offline channels to convey to the government and the Korea Racing Authority, while continuously promoting the strategic excellence of the Gwangseok District and the justification for hosting the bid.
Moving forward, the city intends to concentrate all its administrative efforts on securing feasibility for the bid and making recommendations to the government, centered around the Citywide Steering Committee. At the same time, it will strengthen strategic alliances with neighboring local governments to ensure the bid is confirmed.
Meanwhile, Yangju Mayor Kang Soo-hyun, Yangju City Council Chairman Yoon Chang-cheol, Yangju Social Organizations Council President Song In-ho, and Yangju Women's Association President Yoon Hye-seon were appointed as co-representatives of the Steering Committee.
