포항해양경찰서는 23일 살인 혐의로 A씨를 긴급체포하고, 24일 구속영장을 신청했다고 밝혔다.
해경에 따르면 A씨는 지난 22일 밤 경주시 한 항포구에서 지적장애를 앓고 있는 조카 B씨를 바다에 들어가게 한 뒤 구조하지 않고 방치해 숨지게 한 혐의를 받고 있다.
조사 결과 A씨는 약 6년 전부터 지적장애가 있는 B씨와 치매를 앓는 모친을 부양해 온 것으로 나타났다. A씨는 신변을 비관해 범행을 결심하고, 사전에 장소와 방법 등을 계획한 것으로 조사됐다.
범행 당일 A씨는 숙박 중이던 펜션에서 B씨와 모친에게 수면제를 각각 먹인 뒤 인근 해안가로 이동했다. 이후 A씨가 먼저 바다에 들어간 뒤 B씨를 뒤따라 들어오게 했고, B씨가 물에 빠져 허우적거리는 상황에서도 구조하지 않은 채 혼자 빠져나온 것으로 확인됐다.
해경은 보호 의무가 있는 A씨가 고의로 피해자를 물에 빠뜨린 뒤 방치한 것으로 보고 있다.
A씨는 조사 과정에서 “함께 극단적인 선택을 하려 했다”는 취지로 진술하며 범행을 시인한 것으로 전해졌다.
포항해양경찰서 관계자는 “사회적 약자를 대상으로 한 중대한 범죄인 만큼 엄정하게 수사할 방침”이라며 “휴대전화 디지털 포렌식과 CCTV 분석 등 추가 조사를 통해 정확한 범행 동기와 경위를 밝힐 계획”이라고 밝혔다.
