포항시민연대는 25일 오전 포항시청 브리핑룸에서 기자회견을 열고 “선거는 축제가 되어야 한다”는 제목의 성명서를 발표하며 최근 정치권 갈등 상황에 대해 깊은 우려를 표명했다.
이들은 이번 사안을 단순한 정치적 논란이 아닌 지역 공동체의 근간을 흔들 수 있는 문제로 규정하고 “참담한 심경으로 지켜보고 있다”고 밝혔다. 특히 특정 정당의 포항시장 공천 과정에서 일부 예비후보들이 컷오프 결과에 반발하며 문제를 제기하는 상황에 대해 “시민들에게 피로감과 불안을 안기고 지역사회를 분열시키는 요인이 되고 있다”고 지적했다.
또한 비방과 마타도어식 흑색선전이 확산되는 데 대해 강한 유감을 표하며 “이러한 행태는 진실 규명에 도움이 되지 않을 뿐 아니라 시민사회 분열만을 초래한다”고 강조했다.

이어 “포항은 경제 위기와 인구 감소, 산업 전환 등 중대한 과제에 직면해 있다”며 “정치권이 보여야 할 모습은 갈등과 대립이 아닌 책임 있는 리더십과 미래 비전”이라고 강조했다. 아울러 “내부 분열은 도시 이미지와 지역 정치 경쟁력을 약화시키는 결과로 이어질 수밖에 없다”고 덧붙였다.
이들은 갈등이 장기화될 경우 그 피해가 특정 후보나 정당이 아닌 시민 전체에게 돌아갈 것이라고 경고하며 “지금 필요한 것은 분열을 조장하는 정치가 아니라 공동체를 화합하는 리더십”이라고 밝혔다.
포항시민연대는 “앞으로도 지역의 상식과 균형을 지키며 포항의 지속 가능한 발전과 건강한 선거문화 정착을 위해 함께하겠다”며 공정하고 성숙한 선거문화 조성을 위한 지역사회의 책임 있는 자세를 거듭 촉구했다.
