Yangju City Launches '100,000 Signature Campaign' to Attract Gwacheon Racecourse… “Citizen Participation Urgent”
Pan-Citizen Signature Campaign Launched in Earnest to Attract Gwangseok District… Both Ruling and Opposition Parties Must Join Forces to Contribute to Yangju City’s Development
[Break News Yangju = Reporter Kim Wan-young] Yangju City, Gyeonggi Province, has officially launched a city-wide signature campaign to collect 100,000 signatures to attract the Gwacheon Racecourse to Yangju.
Yangju City announced on the 30th that it is proceeding with the 100,000-signature campaign, coinciding with the inauguration ceremony of the 'Committee for the Promotion of Attracting the Gwacheon Racecourse to Yangju' held on the 23rd.
The signature drive will be conducted in two ways: online signing via the Yangju City website and offline signing of petition forms. Participation is open not only to Yangju citizens but to the general public.
The site proposed by Yangju City as a candidate location for the racecourse is the Gwangseok District (approximately 1.16 million square meters) in the Gwangseok-ri area of Gwangjeok-myeon. The site in question has been neglected for 22 years since being designated as a residential development district in 2004. Its greatest strength is that development can begin immediately without separate compensation procedures, as land compensation has already been completed.
The city anticipates that the relocation of the racecourse will generate approximately 50 billion won in annual local tax revenue, bring in about 3,000 resident employees, revitalize local commercial areas through increased visitor numbers, and attract tourists.
In response, Citizen A stated, "Regardless of party affiliation, politicians must join forces and do their utmost for the future development of Yangju City to secure the Gwacheon Racecourse. In particular, since citizens supported Justice Minister Jeong Seong-ho—Yangju City's only National Assembly member—for a fifth term, this is an opportunity for him to do work worthy of that support."
A Yangju City official said, "The city-wide signature campaign is the most powerful way to directly convey Yangju City's determination to the government and the Korea Racing Authority," adding, "We ask for the active participation of all citizens."
You can sign the online petition on the Yangju City website (www.yangju.go.kr). kwy160901@hanmail.net
