고양특례시가 첨단 인공지능(AI) 기술을 활용한 교통체계 혁신에 나서며 도심 교통 혼잡 해소에 본격적인 시동을 걸었다.
시는 고양경찰서와 협력해 화정역 인근 화정로 일대에 ‘AI 기반 실시간 교통신호 시스템’을 구축하고 지난 1일부터 시범운영에 들어갔다고 3일 밝혔다.
이번에 도입된 시스템은 교차로에 설치된 스마트 CCTV를 통해 수집된 교통량 데이터를 인공지능이 실시간으로 분석하고, 그 결과를 바탕으로 신호 시간을 즉각 조정하는 방식이다.
기존의 고정형 신호 체계와 달리 도로 상황 변화에 따라 유동적으로 대응할 수 있어 교통 흐름 개선 효과가 기대된다.
특히 이번 시스템은 단일 교차로 단위가 아닌, 화정로 일대 7개 교차로를 하나의 축으로 연결해 통합 운영하는 것이 특징이다.
이를 통해 구간 전체의 교통 흐름을 종합적으로 분석하고 최적화함으로써 차량 통행 효율을 극대화하도록 설계됐다.
시범운영이 시작된 이후 현장에서는 변화도 감지되고 있다.
시에 따르면 AI는 각 방향의 교통량에 따라 녹색신호 시간을 최소 1초에서 최대 21초까지 탄력적으로 조정하고 있으며, 차량이 적은 방향의 신호는 줄이고 정체가 심한 구간에는 신호를 더 배분하는 방식으로 ‘신호 손실시간’을 최소화하고 있다.
고양시 관계자는 “이번 시범운영을 통해 확보된 데이터를 면밀히 분석해 시스템의 완성도를 높인 뒤 정식 운영에 들어갈 계획”이라며 “향후 상습 정체 구간을 중심으로 AI 교통신호 시스템을 확대 적용해 시민들이 체감할 수 있는 쾌적한 도로 환경을 조성하겠다”고 말했다.
