대전충남녹색연합 등 7개 시민사회단체가 6일 대전도시공사 앞에서 기자회견을 열고 ‘오월드 재창조 사업’의 전면 재검토를 요구했다.
이들은 대전시가 추진하는 3300억 원 규모의 개발 계획이 야생동물의 서식 환경을 파괴하고 생명을 단순한 오락거리로 치부한다고 주장했다.
이번 사업 계획에는 초대형 롤러코스터 4기 설치와 사파리 면적 확대, 늑대사파리 인근 글램핑장 조성 등이 담겼다.
단체들은 오월드가 공영동물원의 본래 기능인 종 보전과 연구는 도외시하고, 이윤 추구와 자극적인 체험 시설 확충에만 열을 올리고 있다고 비판했다.
송순옥 대전충남녹색연합 공동대표는 청주동물원과 진양호동물원의 사례를 언급하며 오월드 역시 서식지 환경을 복원하고 전문 인력을 확충하는 방향으로 사업을 원점 재검토할 필요가 상당하다고 주장했다.
한재각 대전녹색당 위원장은 놀이기구 위주의 확장이 동물들을 테마공원의 소품으로 전락시켰다며 공적 재원 투입의 정당성을 확보하라고 촉구했다.
조수영 정의당 대전시당 기후정의위원장 또한 3300억 원의 공사채 발행이 시 재정에 큰 부담을 줄 것이라고 지적하며 사업의 반생명적 성격에 관해 일갈했다.
대전 시민사회는 오월드가 방사 불가능한 야생동물을 보호하고 멸종위기 생물을 돌보는 ‘보호구역'의 역할을 충실히 이행해야 할 것이라고 입을 모았다. 아울러 대전시와 도시공사가 개발 중심 계획을 철회하고 인간과 생명체가 공존하는 학습 공간을 설계해야 한다고 덧붙였다.

Jo Soo-young, chairperson of the Climate Justice Committee of the Justice Party's Daejeon City Chapter, also pointed out that the issuance of 330 billion won in corporate bonds would place a heavy burden on the city's finances and strongly criticized the anti-life nature of the project.
Daejeon civil society unanimously agreed that O-World must faithfully fulfill its role as a "protected area" to safeguard wild animals that cannot be released back into the wild and to care for endangered species. Furthermore, they added that the Daejeon City government and the Urban Development Corporation must withdraw their development-centered plans and design a learning space where humans and living creatures can coexist.
