충남대학교가 카이스트(KAIST), 한국국방MICE연구원과 손잡고 국방 인공지능(AI) 및 유지·보수·정비(MRO) 분야의 국가 경쟁력을 높이기 위한 통합 협력 체계를 구축했다.
세 기관은 7일 공군호텔 컨벤션센터에서 업무협약을 체결하고 기술 개발부터 인재 양성까지 아우르는 전주기 협업을 약속했다.
이번 협약은 지난 3월 충남대가 선포한 ‘에이엑스(AX) 지역혁신 허브 비전’의 실천 방안으로 국방 분야의 인공지능 전환을 가속화하려는 목적을 담고 있다.
충남대 AI융합교육연구소는 인적 자원 양성과 정책 연구를 수행하며 카이스트 정보전자연구소는 첨단 기술 개발과 글로벌 연구망 확립에 집중할 계획이다.
한국국방MICE연구원은 민·관·군 협력 플랫폼을 운영하며 국방 정책 지원과 산업 활성화를 위한 가교 역할을 수행한다.
세 기관은 핵심 기술 공동 연구뿐만 아니라 국방 전시회와 포럼 개최 등 국제 협력 사업도 공동으로 추진하기로 합의했다.
아울러 대덕연구개발특구를 거점으로 하는 ‘대전형 국방 AI 클러스터’ 구축 전략과 연계해 지역 기반의 혁신 모델을 발굴할 방침이다.
방산 기업과 스타트업을 연계한 생태계를 조성해 대전을 세계적인 국방 AI 혁신 거점으로 육성한다는 구상도 이번 협약에 포함했다.
장호종 충남대 AI융합교육연구소장은 이번 협약이 국방 AI와 MRO를 유기적으로 연결하는 새로운 협력 패러다임이 될 것이라고 말하며, 연구개발 성과가 정책과 산업 현장으로 이어지는 통합 생태계를 조성하겠다고 강조했다.

The three institutions signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) at the Air Force Hotel Convention Center on the 7th, pledging full-cycle collaboration that encompasses everything from technology development to talent cultivation.
This agreement serves as a practical implementation plan for the "AX Regional Innovation Hub Vision" announced by Chungnam National University last March, aiming to accelerate the transition to AI in the defense sector.
Chungnam National University's AI Convergence Education Research Institute plans to focus on human resource development and policy research, while KAIST's Information and Electronics Research Institute will concentrate on developing cutting-edge technologies and establishing a global research network.
The Korea Defense MICE Institute will operate a public-private-military cooperation platform, acting as a bridge to support defense policies and revitalize the industry. The three institutions agreed to jointly pursue international cooperation projects, such as hosting defense exhibitions and forums, in addition to joint research on core technologies.
Furthermore, they plan to identify region-based innovation models in conjunction with the strategy to establish a "Daejeon-type Defense AI Cluster" centered on the Daedeok Special Research and Development Zone.
The agreement also includes a vision to foster Daejeon into a global hub for defense AI innovation by creating an ecosystem that links defense companies with startups.
Jang Ho-jong, Director of the AI Convergence Education and Research Institute at Chungnam National University, stated that this agreement will serve as a new cooperation paradigm that organically connects defense AI with MRO (Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul).
