천안 아우내은빛복지관은 13일, 한국실명예방재단과 함께 관내 어르신들을 대상으로 무료 안(眼)검진을 실시했다고 밝혔다.
고령화 사회로 접어들며 백내장, 녹내장 등 퇴행성 안질환 예방이 무엇보다 중요해진 시점에서, 의료 사각지대에 놓인 어르신들에게 '밝은 빛'을 선물했다는 평가다.
이날 복지관을 찾은 150여 명의 어르신은 평소 접하기 어려운 전문적인 정밀 검사를 차례로 받았다.
검진은 시력 및 굴절 검사부터 안압, 안저 검사, 그리고 미세한 질환까지 잡아내는 세극등 현미경 검사 등 총 5개 항목에 걸쳐 꼼꼼하게 진행됐다.
단순히 눈이 침침해진 것인지, 아니면 적극적인 치료가 필요한 질병인지를 명확히 판별해 어르신들의 불안감을 해소하는 데 주력했다.
검진에 참여한 한 어르신은 “눈이 뿌옇게 보여도 막상 병원을 찾아가기까지 결심이 쉽지 않았는데, 복지관에서 전문 의사 선생님들이 직접 검사를 해주니 한결 마음이 놓인다”며 밝은 미소를 지었다.
이번 안검진이 일회성 행사에 그치지 않는다는 점도 주목할 대목이다.
한국실명예방재단은 이날 검진 결과에 따라 수술이 시급한 것으로 판단된 저소득층 어르신들에게 수술비를 전액 또는 일부 지원하기로 했다.
이수경 관장은 “어르신들에게 밝은 시력은 단순히 보는 기능을 넘어 세상을 마주하고 소통하는 소중한 통로이자, 행복한 노후를 위한 가장 기본적 권리”라고 강조했다.
