시칠리아를 떠올리면 무엇이 먼저 스쳐 지나갈까.
대개는 영화 대부와 그 음울하면서도 장엄한 음악이 먼저 떠오른다.
그리고 자연스럽게, 마피아라는 단어가 뒤따른다.
실제로 팔레르모와 카타니아에는 지금도 그들의 흔적이 남아 있다.
다만 과거의 폭력적 조직에서 벗어나,
오늘날에는 기업과 경제 영역으로 스며든 또 다른 형태의 권력으로 변모해 가고 있다.
그럼에도 시칠리아라는 이름에는
여전히 부패와 정치적 낙후성이라는 그림자가 길게 드리워져 있다.
하지만 이 섬을 조금 더 들여다보면, 전혀 다른 얼굴과 마주하게 된다.
골목과 발코니,
상점의 진열대에서 쉽게 발견되는 화려한 남녀 얼굴의 도자기 화분.
누군가는 그것을 왕과 왕비의 형상으로 오해하기도 한다.
그러나 그 기원은 왕실이 아니라,
오히려 인간의 가장 원초적인 감정에서 비롯된다.
무어인의 머리(Moor’s Head)
시칠리아에 전해 내려오는 이 장식은 한 민담에서 시작된다.
한 시칠리아 여성이 무어인 남성과 사랑에 빠지지만,
그가 이미 아내가 있는 몸이라는 사실을 알게 된다.
사랑은 순식간에 배신으로 뒤바뀌고,
감정은 증오로 치닫는다.
결국 그녀는 그를 죽이고,
그의 머리를 잘라 화분으로 만들어 바질을 심었다고 한다.
믿기 어려운 이야기지만, 중요한 것은 사실 여부가 아니다.
이 이야기가 오랜 시간 동안 반복되고,
형상으로 남아 지금까지 이어져 왔다는 점이다.
관광객들은 그 화분을 아름다운 장식품으로 소비한다.
그러나 그 속에는
사랑과 질투, 욕망과 복수라는 인간의 감정이 응축되어 있다.
찬란한 태양과 푸른 바다로 기억되는 시칠리아는,
동시에 그렇게 어둡고도 집요한 이야기를 품고 있는 섬이다.
어쩌면 이곳의 진짜 매력은 바로 그 모순 속에 있는지도 모른다.
What comes to mind when you think of Sicily?
For many, it is The Godfather—along with its haunting, majestic score.
Inevitably, the word “mafia” follows close behind.
In reality, traces of that world still linger in Palermo and Catania.
Yet the nature of power has shifted.
What was once overt violence has, over time,
transformed into influence embedded within business and economic structures.
Still, Sicily continues to carry the long shadow of corruption and political stagnation.
But if you look closer, the island reveals a very different face.
In alleyways, on balconies, and in shop windows, vividly decorated ceramic heads
—male and female—
catch the eye. Some assume they represent kings and queens of a distant past.
They do not.
These are the “Moor’s Heads,” rooted not in royalty,
but in a story of raw human emotion.
According to a Sicilian folk tale,
a local woman fell in love with a Moorish man,
only to discover that he already had a wife.
Love turned to betrayal, and betrayal to fury.
In her rage, she killed him, severed his head, and used it as a planter to grow basil.
Whether true or not is beside the point. What matters is that the story endured
—retold, reshaped, and ultimately immortalized in form.
Today, visitors admire these ceramics as charming decorative objects.
Yet beneath their beauty lies a narrative of love, jealousy, desire, and revenge.
Sicily, often remembered for its dazzling sun and blue seas,
is also an island that holds tightly to its darker stories.
Perhaps its true allure lies precisely in that contradiction.

路地やバルコニー、店先に並ぶ、華やかな男女の顔をかたどった陶器の鉢。
王や女王の姿だと誤解されることもあるが、その起源は王室ではない。
それは「ムーア人の頭」と呼ばれる伝統装飾であり、
人間の根源的な感情から生まれたものだ。
ある民間伝承によれば、シチリアの女性がムーア人の男性と恋に落ちる。
しかし彼にはすでに妻がいた。愛は裏切りへと変わり、
やがて激しい怒りへと転じる。
彼女はその男を殺し、その首を切り落とし、
バジルを植える鉢として使ったとされる。
真偽は重要ではない。この物語が語り継がれ、
形となって今も残っていることこそが意味を持つ。
観光客はそれを美しい装飾品として手に取る。
しかしその内側には、愛、嫉妬、欲望、
そして復讐という感情が凝縮されている。
燦々と降り注ぐ太陽と青い海で知られるシチリアは、
同時にこうした暗く執念深い物語を抱えた島でもある。
その魅力は、まさにこの矛盾の中にあるのかもしれない。
