14일 속초시에 따르면, 올해 첫선을 보인 야외 영화 상영 프로그램 '2026 속초 선셋시네마'가 다채로운 작품 라인업과 이색적인 공간 연출로 입소문을 타며 지역의 새로운 야간 관광 명소로 빠르게 안착 중이다.

매주 토요일 일몰 시간에 맞춰 금호동 속초항 친수공원 내 공연장에서 열리는 이번 프로그램은, 평소 쉽게 접하기 힘든 독립예술영화와 다큐멘터리, 강원 지역 로컬시네마 등을 상영해 관람객들에게 수준 높은 문화 향유의 장을 제공하고 있다.

무엇보다 탁 트인 속초항을 배경으로 설치된 300인치 대형 스크린은 압도적인 몰입감을 선사한다. 지난 4일 첫 상영과 11일 봉준호 감독의 '지리멸렬' 상영 당시, 각각 100명이 넘는 관람객이 운집해 파도 소리와 어우러진 영화의 낭만을 만끽했다.

기세를 몰아 오는 18일 저녁 7시 4분부터는 국내 유수의 영화제에서 작품성을 인정받은 '수능을 치려면', '월드 프리미어', '음어오아' 등 3편의 작품이 연이어 상영될 예정이라 더욱 기대를 모은다.
시는 오는 6월까지 시범 운영을 거쳐 시민과 관광객들의 다양한 의견을 수렴한 뒤, 7월부터 공식 운영에 돌입할 계획이다. 이를 통해 인근 설악로데오거리 상권으로의 방문객 유입을 유도하는 등 지역 경제 활성화와의 시너지 효과도 꾀하고 있다.
