장 회장은 13일(현지시간) 한국 철강업계를 대표해 협회 최고 의사결정기구인 집행위원회 회의에 참석했다. 이날 회의에는 중국 보무강철, 일본제철, 인도 JSW 등 주요 글로벌 철강사 최고경영자(CEO)들이 참석해 에너지 위기 대응과 지정학적 리스크가 산업에 미치는 영향, 탄소 배출 측정 방식의 국제 표준화 등 중장기 핵심 과제를 논의했다.
장 회장은 이 자리에서 수요 둔화와 에너지 비용 상승이라는 구조적 어려움 속에서도 탈탄소 전환은 철강업계가 공동으로 해결해야 할 핵심 과제임을 강조하며, 포스코의 탈탄소 로드맵을 공유했다.
특히 “글로벌 철강산업이 성공적인 탈탄소 전환을 이루고 탄소저감 강재가 시장에서 정당한 가치를 인정받기 위해서는 업계 전반의 긴밀한 공조와 연대가 필수적”이라고 강조했다.
이어 장 회장은 인도 JSW그룹 사잔 진달 회장, 중국 하강그룹 리우지엔 동사장 등과 잇따라 회동을 갖고 해외 철강 투자, 탄소저감 기술, 공급망 안정화 등 주요 현안을 논의했다. 이를 통해 그룹의 미래 성장 동력 확보를 위한 협력 방안도 모색했다.
한편 포스코는 이번 회의 기간 중 열린 회원사 총회에서 ‘지속가능성 최우수 멤버(Sustainability Champion)’로 선정됐다. 세계철강협회가 철강 산업의 지속가능 발전을 선도한 기업에 수여하는 이 인증에서 포스코는 2022년 이후 5년 연속 이름을 올리며 글로벌 ESG 경쟁력을 입증했다.
세계철강협회는 전 세계 철강사와 지역 협회, 연구기관 등 157개 회원사가 참여하는 글로벌 철강 산업 대표 기구로, 업계 협력과 지속가능한 발전을 위한 다양한 활동을 펼치고 있다.

POSCO Group Chairman Jang In-hwa attended the regular meeting of the World Steel Association (worldsteel) in Berlin, Germany, and emphasized the need for cooperation for the global steel industry’s decarbonization transition.
On the 13th (local time), Chairman Jang attended the meeting of the Executive Committee, the association’s highest decision-making body, representing the Korean steel industry. CEOs of major global steel companies, including China’s Baowu Steel, Nippon Steel, and India’s JSW, attended the meeting to discuss key mid-to-long-term tasks, such as responding to the energy crisis, the impact of geopolitical risks on the industry, and the international standardization of carbon emission measurement methods.
At the meeting, Chairman Jang emphasized that the decarbonization transition is a core task that the steel industry must address jointly, despite structural challenges such as slowing demand and rising energy costs, and shared POSCO’s decarbonization roadmap. In particular, he emphasized that “close cooperation and solidarity across the entire industry are essential for the global steel industry to achieve a successful decarbonization transition and for carbon-reducing steel to be recognized for its fair value in the market.”
Following this, Chairman Jang held successive meetings with India’s JSW Group Chairman Sajan Jindal and China’s Hegang Group Chairman Liu Jian to discuss key issues such as overseas steel investment, carbon reduction technology, and supply chain stabilization. Through these discussions, they also explored cooperation strategies to secure the group’s future growth engines.
Meanwhile, POSCO was selected as a “Sustainability Champion” at the general assembly of member companies held during the conference. POSCO has demonstrated its global ESG competitiveness by being named in this certification, awarded by the World Steel Association to companies that lead the sustainable development of the steel industry, for five consecutive years since 2022.
The World Steel Association is the representative body of the global steel industry, comprising 157 member companies including steel companies, regional associations, and research institutions worldwide, and is carrying out various activities for industry cooperation and sustainable development.
