브레이크뉴스 정민우 기자= KT&G는 일손 부족으로 경작에 어려움을 겪는 잎담배 농가를 돕기 위해 지난 15일 충청북도 진천군 잎담배 농가에서 모종이식 봉사활동을 진행했다고 16일 밝혔다.
김종오 KT&G 김천공장장을 비롯한 임직원 봉사단 30여 명은 충청북도 진천군 진천읍에 위치한 잎담배 농가를 방문해 약 1만3000㎡(3900평) 규모의 농지에 약 2만4000주의 잎담배 모종을 이식하는 봉사활동을 펼쳤다.
잎담배 경작은 밭에 씨를 뿌리지 않고 육묘시설에서 모종을 길러 이식하는 과정을 거친다. 특히, 모종 이식은 농사의 결실을 결정하는 중요한 과정으로, 대부분 수작업으로 진행돼 많은 노동력이 요구된다.
KT&G는 2007년부터 잎담배 농가를 대상으로 20년째 봉사활동을 이어오고 있으며, 잎담배 모종이식 뿐만 아니라, 무더위로 인해 노동 강도가 높은 여름철 잎담배 수확 활동도 도우며 상생을 이뤄 나가고 있다.
김종오 KT&G 김천공장장은 “밸류체인 관점에서 농가와의 상생을 도모하기 위해 20년간 봉사활동을 이어왔다”며 “농촌 인구 감소 및 고령화로 노동력 확보에 어려움을 겪는 농가와 상생하기 위해 앞으로도 다양한 지원을 이어 나갈 것이다”고 말했다.
한편, KT&G는 2013년부터 국내 잎담배 농가 복지증진을 위한 지원 사업도 꾸준히 펼쳐오고 있다. 지난해 7월 잎담배 경작인 건강검진 비용과 자녀 학자금 지원을 위해 4억 원의 지원금을 전달했으며, 현재까지 총 1만5800명의 경작인들이 수혜를 받았다.
