우선 눈길을 끄는 것은 포항 오어사 동종의 국보 승격 도전이다. 고려시대인 1216년 주종장 순광이 제작한 이 동종은 제작 연대와 장인, 봉안 사찰이 명확히 기록된 드문 사례로 꼽힌다. 전통 양식을 기반으로 하면서도 통형 음통과 독특한 당좌 표현 등 고려 후기 특징을 잘 보여준다는 점에서 학계의 높은 평가를 받고 있다.
이 동종은 1995년 사찰 정비 과정에서 발견돼 1998년 보물로 지정된 이후 꾸준히 학술적 가치를 인정받아 왔다. 최근 경상북도 문화유산위원회 심의를 통과하면서 국가지정문화유산(국보) 승격 신청 대상에 이름을 올렸고, 향후 국가유산청의 최종 판단만을 남겨두게 됐다.

특히 최근 표본조사에서 기존 지정 구역 외곽에서도 유물 분포가 확인되면서, 유적의 온전한 보존을 위해 보호 범위를 넓혀야 한다는 필요성이 제기됐다. 이에 포항시는 도 문화유산위원회 심의를 거쳐 국가유산청에 구역 확대를 공식 신청할 계획이다.
시는 이번 사업을 단순한 문화재 관리 차원을 넘어 지역 발전 전략과도 연계한다는 방침이다. ‘장기읍성 종합정비’와 ‘무형유산 전수교육관 건립’ 등 향후 국비 확보 사업과 연결해 문화유산 보존과 활용 기반을 동시에 구축하겠다는 구상이다.
장상길 포항시장 권한대행은 “문화유산은 지역의 역사와 정체성을 담는 핵심 자산”이라며 “시민들이 일상 속에서 향유할 수 있는 역사문화 거점으로 육성해 나가겠다”고 밝혔다.
이번 국보 승격 추진과 유적 보호구역 확대가 현실화될 경우, 포항은 산업도시를 넘어 역사·문화 도시로서의 정체성까지 한층 강화할 것으로 기대된다.
