이재명 대통령이 19일 4·19 혁명 제66주년을 맞아 "분연히 떨쳐 일어선 시민들의 담대한 용기는 굴곡진 대한민국 현대사 갈림길마다 길을 알려준 민주주의 등불이 됐다"고 밝혔다.
이 대통령은 이날 오전 서울 강북구 국립 4·19 민주묘지에서 열린 제66주년 4·19 혁명 기념식에 참석해 기념사에서 "66년 전 오늘 국민 주권의 우렁찬 함성이 오만하고 무도한 권력을 무너뜨렸다"며 이같이 말했다.
그러면서 "1960년 4월 19일 전국 각지서 일어난 항쟁 물결이 철옹성 같던 독재 정권을 마침내 무너뜨렸다"며 "나라 주인이 국민임을 일깨운 이 위대한 승리는 유네스코 세계기록유산에 등재됐고 이제 세계 역사에 남을 민주혁명으로 당당하게 기억될 것"이라고 했다.
또 "불의에 항거한 4·19 민주 이념 토양 위에서 대한민국은 세계 10대 경제 강국이자 세계를 선도하는 문화강국으로 눈부신 도약·번영을 이룰 수 있었다"며 "국민이 피땀으로 일궈낸 자유민주주의적 기본 질서는 한 사람 한 사람 창의·가능성을 이끈 원동력이었고, 국난 딛고 위기를 기회로 만든 역동성 근간"이라고 했다.
이어 "부마 항쟁·5·18 민주화 운동·6월 항쟁을 거쳐 촛불·빛 혁명까지 이어진 4·19 정신은 참된 주권자 나라를 갈망하는 강고한 연대 힘으로 피어났다"며 "고령의 4·19 혁명 유공자분들에 시급한 의료 지원 또한 더욱 강화하고 세심하게 챙길 것"이라고 했다.
더불어 "자랑스러운 민주주의 역사는 순풍에 돛 단 유람선처럼 평온하게 온 게 결코 아니다"며 "4·19 혁명 불과 1년 뒤 군부 세력 쿠데타가 벌어졌고, 세계 10위 경제 강국이자 민주주의 모범국가에서 경천동지할 친위 군사 쿠데타가 현실이 되기도 했다"고 주장했다.
