이 의원은 15일 시의회 대회의실에서 교사, 학부모, 관계 전문가 등을 초청해 대구시교육청이 운영 중인 IB교육 프로그램이 앞으로 나아갈 방향을 모색하는 시간을 가졌다.

이날 토론회는 시교육청이 2019년부터 시작한 IB 후보학교 운영에서부터 그동안의 IB교육 프로그램 운영 등에 대한 현황과 문제점을 알아보고 개선 방안을 찾고자 마련된 것으로 알려졌다.
토론회에서는 교육과혁신연구소 이혜정 소장이 ‘IB 공교육 도입 현황 및 과제’를 내용으로 주제 발표한 뒤 6명의 토론자가 주제에 대한 자유토론을 진행했다.
자유토론에서는 교사와 학부모 등 6명의 토론자가 IB교육 운영에 대한 찬성 및 반대의 입장에서 각자의 생각과 의견을 발표했고, 이후 방청석의 참석자들과 자유롭게 질의응답을 주고받는 등 활발한 논의가 이루어졌다.
이날 토론회를 주관한 이진련 대구시의원은 “현재 대구교육청이 IB교육에 집착하고 있는 상황”이라며, “교육과정에 지역과 공교육에 대한 이해와 정체성을 담아내지 못한다면 각종 문제점이 나타날 수밖에 없다”라고 꼬집었다.
이어 이 의원은 ”학습자의 자기주도적 성장 추구를 위해서는 공교육 혁신에 나서야지 외국의 교육프로그램을 도입하는 것이 대안이 되지는 않을 것이다”고 지적하며 “이번 토론이 더 나은 교육 방안을 모색하는 의미 있는 시간이 되었기를 바란다”라고 말했다.
