[브레이크뉴스=이성용기자] 창원특례시는 7일 오전 창원 진전 8의사 묘역에서 경남동부보훈지청이 주관하는 ‘창원 진전 국가관리묘역 지정 기념식’이 열렸다고 밝혔다.
이번 기념식은 1919년 4.3 삼진의거 당시 순국한 8의사의 합동 묘역이 지난 1월 26일 국가관리묘역으로 지정됨에 따라 순국선열들의 숭고한 희생과 뜻을 기리고자 마련됐다.
기념식에는 황기철 국가보훈처장, 최형두 국회의원, 도?시의원, 마산중부경찰서장, 보훈단체장, 진전 국가관리묘역에 안장된 변재복?김수동 애국지사의 유족, 지역주민 등 120여 명이 참석했다.
창원특례시와 경남동부보훈지청은 국가관리묘역 관리와 활성화를 위한 협약을 맺고 국가관리묘역을 활성화하고 나라사랑 정신 함양을 위해 공동으로 협력하고 노력할 것을 다짐했다.
국가보훈처는 2020년 9월 독립유공자, 국가유공자 등이 안장된 국립묘지 외의 장소를 국가관리묘역으로 지정해 관리하고자 「국립묘지의 설치 및 운영에 관한 법률」을 개정했다.
이에 시는 지난해 12월 17일 8의사 묘역이 국가관리묘역으로 지정될 수 있도록 실태조사서 및 지정요청서를 경남동부보훈지청에 제출했고 1월 26일 국가관리묘역으로 지정됐다.
허성무 창원특례시장은 “8의사 묘역이 국가관리묘역이 지정된 것은 지자체와 지역주민이 함께 뜻을 모아서 이뤄낸 것으로 매우 의미가 깊다”며 “앞으로 순국선열의 헌신을 기억하고 희생에 보답할 수 있도록 다양한 보훈 정책을 추진해 보훈 가족들이 창원시민으로서의 자긍심을 가질 수 있도록 노력하겠다”고 말했다.
