오는 4월 26일부터 5월 2일까지 서울 인사동 라메르 갤러리 1층 전시실에서 98세 할머니 정옥희 작가의 첫 개인전 ‘자연의 풍경’ 전이 열린다.
지난주였다. 모 일간 신문사에서 최장기간 미술 담당 기자로 정년 하신 이용 기자님의 ‘이 관장이 살펴보아야 할 전시가 있다’는 전언에 곧바로 멀지 않은 프레스센터에 있는 어느 사무실을 찾아갔다.
GE 코리아 회장을 지내신 기업인이며 화가로도 익히 알려진 강석진 회장님이었다. 1973년 미국에 본사를 둔 세계적인 첨단기술 기업 GE에 입사하여 GE 코리아 회장을 맡아 전설적인 경영 업적을 남긴 분이다.
미 공군기가 한국전쟁 당시 남한을 수호한 사실을 앞세워 미 국방성을 설득하여 전투기용 제트엔진 기술이 유일하게 한국에 도입되었다. 오늘날 초음속 전투기를 독자적으로 생산하는 세계에 몇 안 되는 나라로 존재하는 배경이다.
98세 나이에 첫 개인전을 여는 정옥희 할머니 작가 사위인 강석진 회장의 진지한 설명에 많은 이야기가 있었다. 5년 전 뇌경색 증상으로 요양병원 생활을 하게 되신 장모님을 친어머님처럼 모시는 강 회장은 3년 전 어느 날 대화 중에 ‘사실은 내가 소학교에서 그림을 아주 잘 그렸거든!’ ‘담임 선생님이 내 그림을 복도에 붙여놓고 학생들에게 칭찬을 많이 하셨는데....)라며 1세기에 가까운 아득한 회상을 들었다.
문득 그림 그리는 시간을 만들어 드려야겠다는 생각에 75세에 그림을 시작하여 세계에 알려진 미국의 모지스 할머니 작가 화집을 가져다드렸다. 취미 삼아 어머님도 그림을 한번 그려보시라는 권유에 ‘이 나이에 무슨...’ 손사레를 치셨다.
그러나 수채화 물감과 기본적인 도구들을 갖다 드리고 기초적인 기법을 직접 시연하여 설명하면서 주말이면 병원을 찾아가 꾸준히 지도를 해드렸다. 불과 몇 개월도 지나지 않은 어느 주말 병원을 찾았을 때 병실 창에 놓인 그림을 보고 눈물이 핑 돌았다는 먹먹한 회상을 매만졌다.

그림 실력이 빠르게 달라지신 것이다. 이울러 정신건강과 표정이 눈에 띄게 좋아지셨다. 요양보호사 말에 의하면 휠체어에 앉으셔서 그림을 그리시는 불편함에도 너무나 좋아하시며 하루 몇 시간씩 집중하신다면서 그림 그리는 편안한 환경을 만들어 드리는 것이 가장 좋은 간병이었다는 것이다.
정옥희 할머니는 1925년 충남 공주에서 태어나 결혼 후 7남매를 키우시며 지금도 이름만 대면 많은 사람이 기억하는 유명 요식업을 운영하셨다. 치열한 삶의 파도에 침수된 꿈이 95세에 세상에 드러난 것이다. 정옥희 할머니는 지난 3년간 200여 점의 작품을 그리셨다. 그중 60여 점을 선별하여 첫 개인전을 연다.
사무실에 있는 전시 준비 작품들을 살펴보면서 가슴을 걸어오는 이야기가 있었다. 요양병원 창문에 드러나는 자연이 유일한 시야인 극히 제한된 환경에서 그린 작품들은 100년의 삶에서 간직한 지워지지 않는, 아니 지울 수 없는 유년의 기억이 흥건하게 녹아있었다.
95세에 처음 붓을 들어 98세에 이르기까지 3년 동안 그려내신 작품에 대한 평가는 오직 그림을 바라보는 관람자의 몫이라는 생각뿐이었다. 거의 모든 작품에 담긴 길을 바라보며 삶이란 길과 같은 것임을 의미한 메시지가 가슴을 두드렸다.
돌아오는 길 동양 사상의 창시자인 공자와 제자들의 어록을 엮은 논어(論語)의 바른 정치에 대한 지침을 담은 위정편(爲政編) 4장을 헤아렸다.
나는 열다섯에 학문에 뜻을 두었다는 지우학(志于學)에서부터 서른 살에 학문을 통하여 바로 설 수 있었다는 이립(而立)과 마흔 살이 되어서는 흔들림이 없었다는 불혹(不惑)에 이어 쉰 살이 되어 하늘의 뜻을 알았다는 지천명(知天命)과 예순이 되어 귀(耳)가 순리를 쫓기 시작하였다는 이순(耳順)에 이어 일흔 살이 되어 내 마음이 하고자 하는 바를 따라도 크게 어긋남이 없었다는 종심(從心)을 말하였다.
이는 당시 인간이 70살을 산다는 것은 천수를 누리는 것임을 뜻하는 것으로 이러한 사실은 758년에 시성 두보가 발표한 곡강의 시 두 수(曲江二首)에서 (인생 칠십 살기는 예부터 드문 일이라네-人生七十古來稀)라고 노래한 시에서 전해진 70살 나이를 이르는 고희(古稀)에서 증명한 사실이다.
이후 여든 살을 이르는 팔순(八旬)과 아흔 살을 뜻하는 구순(九旬)에 이어 한자 百에서 一을 빼면 白이 된다는 뜻의 아흔아홉 살을 이르는 백수(白壽)가 전해진 의미도 인간이 100세의 삶을 산다는 것은 극히 어려운 하늘의 뜻을 말하는 것이다.

인간 승리의 예술혼을 펼친 대표적 인물이 75세에 그림을 그리기 시작하여 세계에 알려진 미국의 모지스 할머니(1860~1961)이다. 할머니는 너무나 가난한 집안에서 태어나 시골에 교실 하나짜리 학교를 이르는 원룸 스쿨에서 잠시 공부하였을 뿐이었으며 당시 미술 시간이 가장 행복한 시간이었다고 훗날 회상하였다.
모지스 할머니는 가난 때문에 12살 나이에 이웃 마을 부잣집에 들어가 농사일과 바느질에 이르기까지 온갖 잡일을 하다가 함께 일하던 농부와 27세에 결혼하여 농부의 아내로 극히 평범한 삶을 살았다.
모지스 할머니는 뛰어난 손 자수에서 남다른 감성을 일깨워 75세에 그림을 그리기 시작하였다. 1938년 78세에 뉴욕 어느 약국에 걸렸던 작품이 수집가에 의하여 알려지면서 79세이던 다음 해 뉴욕 현대 미술관(MoMA)의 기획전 ‘현대 알려지지 않은 미국 화가들’에 3점의 작품이 전시되었다. 이어 80세이던 1940년 뉴욕 유명 갤러리 생테티엔에서 ‘농장 부인이 그린 것’이라는 첫 개인전이 열려 세계적인 주목을 받았다.
