【브레이크뉴스 경주】박희경 기자=한국원자력환경공단(이사장 조성돈)은 지난 20일 영국 원자력해체청(NDA, Nuclear Decommissioning Agency, 이하 NDA)과 방폐물관리 분야 협력을 위한 MOU를 체결했다고 23일 밝혔다.

NDA는 영국 내 원자력시설 해체 및 방폐물관리를 담당하는 에너지안보탄소중립부(DESNZ) 산하 기관으로 영국 전역의 17개 부지 내 원자력시설 해체와 환경 복원을 진행하고 있으며, 고준위방폐물 처분시설 확보를 위하여 부지선정 프로세스를 추진하고 있다.
Cumbria(컴브리아, 잉글랜드州)에 위치한 NDA 본사에서 열린 MOU 체결식에는 공단 조성돈 이사장, NDA David Peattie 이사장 등이 참석했다.
이번 MOU는, 윤석열 대통령의 영국 국빈방문을 계기로 22일 런던에서 개최된‘한(韓)-영(英) 비즈니스 포럼’(한국경제인협회 및 영국 기업통상부 공동 주최)에서 산업통상자원부 방문규 장관과 Claire Coutinho 에너지안보탄소중립부 장관 간 맺은 원전협력 MOU의 실행력 강화를 위해 체결됐다.
양 기관은 원전 해체, 중저준위 및 고준위방폐물 관리 분야 등 후행핵주기 전반에 대한 정보 공유 및 기술 협력을 약속했다.
조성돈 이사장은 “방사성폐기물 관리라는 장기적인 임무를 완수하기 위해서는 양 기관의 공고한 파트너십이 중요하다”고 강조하면서, “지속적인 협력의 성과로서 양 국이 방사성폐기물 안전 관리의 결실을 맺을 수 있기를 바란다”고 언급했다.
또한 NDA의 David Peattie 이사장 역시 “양 기관 협력을 통하여 후행핵주기 관리사업의 안전성과 지속가능성을 촉진할 수 있을 것”이라고 말했다.

It was signed to strengthen the implementation of the nuclear power plant cooperation MOU signed between Claire Coutinho, Minister of Energy, Security and Carbon Neutrality.
The two organizations promised information sharing and technical cooperation in the entire post-nuclear cycle, including nuclear power plant decommissioning and low- and intermediate-level and high-level radioactive waste management.
Chairman Seong-don Cho emphasized that “a solid partnership between the two organizations is important to complete the long-term mission of radioactive waste management,” and added, “I hope that the two countries will be able to bear fruit in radioactive waste safety management as a result of continued cooperation.” He mentioned.
In addition, NDA Chairman David Peattie also said, “Through cooperation between the two organizations, we will be able to promote the safety and sustainability of the post-nuclear cycle management project.”
