정명석 목사 사건은 지난 3월, 글로벌 OTT(Over-the-top=영화, TV 방영 프로그램 등의 미디어 콘텐츠를 인터넷을 통해 소비자에게 제공하는 서비스) 회사인 넷플릭스에 “나는 신이다”라는 제목으로 방영된 이후, 국제적으로 알려진 사건이 됐다. 관련 개신교 교단인 기독교복음선교회(JMS)측은 지난 4월부터 연말까지 평화시위-거리선교 방식으로 정명석 목사 사건의 공정한 재판을 촉구해왔다.
여러 평화시위 가운데 가장 큰 시위는 지난 10월15일 서울시 영등포구 여의대로, 국회의사당이 있는 여의도에서 가진 평화시위였다. 시위 주최측인 기독교복음선교회(JMS)는 이날 20만명이 모였다고 추산했다. 지난 4월 이후 가졌던 거리-광장 시위 가운데 최대 규모였다. 교단측은 “이날 평화시위로 해외 73개국 생중계, 선교회 정체성과 핵심교리를 증거했다”고 밝혔다.
나는 왜 JMS 정명석 목사 관련 글을 지속적으로 써 왔는가? 아래는 그 이유에 해당한다. 필자는 기독교복음선교회(JMS)측의 평화시위-거리선교 등을 지켜보면서, 그 기록물(記錄物)로 "나는 정명석을 만나러 간다"는 제목의 저서를 발간(2023년 9월 25일. 대양미디어 발행)했다. 이 책은 교보문고 13위 베스트셀러까지 진입했었다.

필자는 올해 고난당하는 JMS 창립자 정명석 목사와 관련, 기자로서의 소임을 감당했던 한 해였음을 고백한다. 저서-기사의 반응들이 이를 입증한다. "기자는 약자의 편에 서야한다"는 믿음을 가지고 있다. 물론 그 누구에게든 성 폭해 피해를 당한 피해자가 사회적인 약자일 수 있다. 하지만, 검찰 수사나 재판 과정 중에 피고측에 공정성이 결여 되는 뭔가가 발견 됐다면, 피고가 약자 위치로 전락할 수 있다. 정명석 사건 관련 재판이 그렇다고 생각했다.
정명석 목사 사건의 경우, 검찰 구형 30년-1심 판결 23년은 너무 중(重)하다. 대법원 양형기준을 훨씬 초월했다. 그런 점에서, 정명석 그는 약자다. 국가 사법 권력의 중압감, 너무 숨이 차다. 필자는 기자이다. 이게 약자 상태인 정명석을 돕는 이유다. 공정한 재판이 답이라고 생각한다! 이 사건과 관련, 필자는 처음부터 정명석 목사는 한국인이며, 한국 남자한테 1만명이상이 강간을 당했다는 것은 가짜이며, 이런 가짜기사가 해외에 나도는 것은 한국의 수치라는 것을 강조해왔다. 1만명이 강간당했다는, 피해자 리스트가 나온다면 이를 믿겠다고 피력했다. 하지만, 그럴 리가 없다. 그러하니 이런 피해자 수치는 왜곡-과장된 ‘가짜 뉴스’에 해당되는 셈이다.
