Among the top 500 companies, the proportion of CEOs in their 60s is close to 50%. Professional managers account for 83.4%.
Break News Reporter Moon Hong-cheol= Among the CEOs of Korea's top 500 companies in 2024, those in their 60s were calculated to be the largest, approaching 50% of the total.
This is interpreted as the reason why companies are focusing on ‘stable operation’ as management uncertainty, such as the novel coronavirus infection (Corona 19) pandemic, deepens.
In addition, the proportion of professional managers among the CEOs of Korea's top 500 companies was 83.4%, an increase of 1.6 percentage points (14 people) from 2020, three years ago. The proportion of owner families decreased by 1.6 percentage points (10 people) from 18.2% (121 people) at the end of 2020 to 16.6% (111 people) at the beginning of this year.
According to CEO Score on the 10th, as a result of investigating the ages of CEOs of 500 large companies as of the end of 2020 and early 2024, the average age of 670 CEOs as of the beginning of this year was 59.7 years old. This is an increase of 1.1 years compared to the end of 2020 (58.6 years), about three years ago.
At the end of 2020, the proportion of CEOs in their 50s was the highest at 50.6%, but in the past three years, the proportion of CEOs in their 60s has increased significantly. During the same period, the proportion of CEOs in their 50s decreased by 12.1 percentage points from 50.6% (337 people) to 38.5% (258 people).
The proportion of CEOs in their 30s also decreased by 0.6%p (4 people) from 0.9% (6 people) at the end of 2020 to 0.3% (2 people) at the beginning of this year, and the proportion of CEOs in their 40s also decreased from 7.2% (48 people) at the end of 2020. It fell 0.5% point (3 people) to 6.7% (45 people) at the beginning of this year.
On the other hand, the proportion of CEOs in their 70s and 80s was found to be 4.3% (29 people) and 1.0% (7 people), respectively, an increase of 0.1 percentage point (1 person) compared to the end of 2020. As a result, at the beginning of this year, there were more CEOs in their 80s (7) than those in their 30s (2).
The youngest CEO, Chop Nathan Michael, CEO of AI Life Insurance, was born in 1988 and is 36 years old. Along with CEO Michael, △ Deutsche Motors CEO Kwon Hyuk-min (born in 1986, 38 years old) △ Seo Jin-seok, Celltrion CEO (born 1984, 40 years old) △ Hanwha CEO Kim Dong-gwan (born 1983, 41 years old) △ TKG Taekwang CEO Park Joo-hwan (born 1983, 41 years old) ) △Seul-ah Kim Curly CEO (born in 1983, 41 years old) △Dong-Hwi Koo CEO LSM&M (Born in 1982, 42 years old) △Jeong-Hyeon Kwak CEO KG Chemical (Born in 1982, 42 years old) △Guk-Hwan Lee Wooah Brothers CEO (19 years old) Born in 1982, 42 years old ) △Choi Soo-yeon, CEO of NAVER (born in 1981, 43 years old) were representative representatives born in the 1980s.
Das CEO Lee Sang-eun (born in 1933, 91 years old), the only CEO in his 90s, was the country's oldest CEO. Next, △ Lee Bu-seop, CEO of Dongjin Semicam (born in 1937, 87 years old) △ Byeong-joong Kang, CEO of Nexen Tire (born in 1939, 85 years old) △ Gyeong-sik Son, CEO of CJ CheilJedang (born in 1939, 85 years old) △ Byung-yoon Eom, CEO of Yura (born in 1941, 83 years old) 7 people were in their 80s, including △ Kim Young-dae, CEO of Daesung Industrial (born in 1942, 82 years old), △ Myung-geun Lee, CEO of Sungwoo Hitech (born in 1944, 80 years old), and △ Cho Si-young, CEO of Daechang (born in 1944, 80 years old).
In addition, as of the beginning of this year, the proportion of professional managers among CEOs was 83.4%, an increase of 1.6 percentage points (14 people) compared to three years ago. The proportion of owner families fell by 1.6 percentage points (10 people) from 18.2% (121 people) at the end of 2020 to 16.6% (111 people) at the beginning of this year.
The average age of the owner family decreased by 0.2 years from 59.7 years at the end of 2020 to 59.5 years at the beginning of this year. Although the age of CEOs of the top 500 companies is increasing, the average age of the owner family has slightly decreased.
This is believed to be due to the succession of CEOs from the generation of children of owners in their 40s who were appointed as CEOs in the second half of last year. Specifically, GS Group owner Heo Yun-hong (45 years old) is the CEO of GS E&C, LS 3rd generation owner Koo Dong-hwi (42 years old) is the CEO of LS M&M, and Celltrion Group owner Seo Jin-seok (40 years old) is the CEO of Celltrion. Each has been appointed as a representative.
The proportion of female CEOs of the top 500 companies was still low at around 2%, both three years ago and now. The number of female CEOs of the top 500 companies was 2.4% (16 people) at the beginning of this year, an increase of only 0.4 percentage points (3 people) compared to the end of 2020 (2.0%, 13 people).
During this period, eight companies appointed female CEOs, including LG Household & Health Care, Sae-A Trading, Suhyup Bank, CJ Olive Young, Our Home, Kakao, Korea Gas Corporation, and Hanssem.
