첫 경선지인 아이오와 코커스(당원대회)에선 도널드 트럼프 전 대통령이 압승하며 무난하게 1승을 거머쥐었다.
15일(현지시간) AP통신에 따르면 아이오와주 공화당은 이날 오후 11시4분 기준 아이오와 코커스의 90.9%가 집계된 상황에서 트럼프 전 대통령이 51.1%(5만5429표)를 득표하며 1위를 차지했다.
뒤 이어 론 디샌티스 플로리다주지사가 21.2%(2만3051표), 니키 헤일리 전 유엔대사는 19.1%(2만695표)를 얻었다.
AP통신은 집계는 아직 진행 중이지만 트럼프 전 대통령이 일찌감치 승리를 확정지었다고 설명했다.
이날 트럼프 전 대통령은 승리가 사실상 확정된 뒤 연단에 올라 "무엇보다 아이오와의 훌륭한 주민들에게 감사를 표하고 싶다"며 "지금이 바로 우리 나라가 모두 힘을 모아야 할 때라 생각한다. 공화당이든 민주당이든, 진보든 보수든 함께 힘을 합치길 원한다"고 말했다.
