필자(브레이크뉴스 발행인)는 지난 1973년부터 기자생활을 했다. 필자는 군대 근무할 때 정훈부서(주특기 850)에서 일해 이 기간까지를 기자생활에 포함 시킨다. 올해, 기자생활 51년째로 접어들었다. 이 기간, 한국 언론산업의 발전을 몸으로 체험하면서 살았다.
지난 2021년 통계에 따르면, 이 해의 언론산업 전체 매출은 총 10조 564억원. 언론산업에 종사하는 수는 6만 1,489명, 이 가운데 기자직에서 일하는 수는 3만 3,971명에 달한다.
필자가 기자로 일해 온 기간에, 인터넷 언론 시대가 도래 했다. 이로 인해, 이 분야의 산업과 언론자유가 대폭 확장됐다. 인터넷 언론 부분만큼은 세계 최고의 선진국가가 됐다고 자평한다.
인터넷 매체의 경우, 사업체수는 11,257개(2023년 3월 24일 현재)에 달한다. 지난 2021년 통계에 의하면 인터넷 신문산업의 총 매출액은 6,729억원. 인터넷 신문의 종사자는 21,040명이며, 기자 수는 14,225명이었다.
이러한 수치로 봐, 한국의 언론산업은 양적으로 급팽창했다. 한국은 세계 10대 경제대국이 됐다. 이런 시기에 한국 언론은 경제 성장과 함께 언론분야의 선진국으로 확실하게 진입했다고 평하고 싶다.
한국 경제의 급속 성장이 언론산업 부흥의 요체이기도 했다. 대기업들의 언론 광고가 언론산업 성장의 자원(에너지원)이었기 때문이다.
군사정부 시절이었던 박정희 시대는 그야 말로 ‘언론 암흑기’였다. 노태우 정부 시기부터 언론매체의 자유 발행의 길이 열려, 지금에 달해서는 세계 최고의 언론 자유 국가가 됐다. 위의 통계가 말해준다.
우리나라에선, 지금 이 시간에도 3만 3,971명(2021년 통계)의 기자들이 활동하고 있다. 기자에게 주어진 직무는 감시(監視)자의 기능이다. 이 많은 기자들이 활동하는 한, 한국의 핵심체제, 즉 민주주의는 희망적이라고 단언한다.
이런 언론 대(大) 자유의 시대에 기자생활-신문사 발행인을 해왔다는 것은 필자에겐 “최고의 행운(幸運)이었다”고 생각한다. 오, 대한민국 나의 조국이여! 대한민국, 만세다!! moonilsuk@naver.com

Rapid development of the Korean media industry... “Oh, Korea, my homeland! Long live the Republic of Korea!!”
[Essay approach] Living as a journalist in the era of great freedom of the press - working as a newspaper publisher is, for me, “the greatest luck.”

The author (publisher of Break News) has been a journalist since 1973. When the author was serving in the military, he worked in the Jeonghun Department (Special 850) and includes this period in his life as a reporter. This year, he enters his 51st year as a reporter. During this period, he lived and experienced firsthand the development of the Korean media industry.
According to statistics for 2021, the total sales of the media industry this year totaled 10.564 trillion won. The number of people working in the media industry is 61,489, of which 33,971 work as reporters.
During the period I have been working as a journalist, the era of Internet journalism has arrived. As a result, industry and press freedom in this field were greatly expanded. We are proud to say that we have become the world's most advanced country in terms of Internet media.
In the case of Internet media, the number of businesses reaches 11,257 (as of March 24, 2023). According to statistics in 2021, the total sales of the internet newspaper industry were 672.9 billion won. The number of Internet newspaper workers was 21,040, and the number of reporters was 14,225.
Looking at these figures, Korea's media industry has rapidly expanded quantitatively. Korea has become one of the world's 10th largest economies. At this time, I would like to say that Korean media has clearly entered the advanced ranks of the media sector along with economic growth.
The rapid growth of the Korean economy was also the key to the revival of the media industry. This is because the media advertisements of large corporations were a resource (energy source) for the growth of the media industry.
The Park Chung-hee era, during the military government, was truly a ‘dark age for journalism.’ Since the Roh Tae-woo administration, the path to freedom of press has been opened, and today, the country has become the world's best press-free country. The statistics above speak for themselves.
In Korea, at this moment, 33,971 reporters (2021 statistics) are active. The job given to reporters is that of a watchdog. I assert that as long as these many reporters are active, there is hope for Korea's core system, that is, democracy.
I think that working as a journalist and publisher of a newspaper in this era of great freedom of the press was “the greatest luck.” Oh, Korea, my homeland! Long live the Republic of Korea!!
