Break News Reporter Moon Hong-cheol= It was found that the majority of companies will close for four days during the Lunar New Year holiday this year and pay bonuses at a similar level to last year.

According to the Korea Employers Federation on the 5th, as a result of conducting a '2024 Lunar New Year holiday survey' targeting 715 companies (based on responding companies) with five or more employees across the country, 85.7% of companies implementing Lunar New Year holidays will be closed for '4 days'. It was investigated. This was followed by ‘more than 5 days’ at 8.7% and ‘less than 3 days’ at 5.6%.

Among companies that closed for ‘more than 5 days’ beyond the normal 4-day holiday, 67.4% gave the reason as ‘mandatory holiday in accordance with collective agreements and employment rules rather than work or cost issues.’ Other responses included ‘to reduce costs such as annual leave allowance’ (15.2%) and ‘adjust production due to lack of work, etc.’ (8.7%).

For companies with 300 or more employees, the response of 'closed for more than 5 days' (16.7%) was higher than for companies with less than 300 employees (7.6%), and the response of 'closed for less than 3 days' was higher for companies with 300 or more employees (6.0%) and for companies with less than 300 employees (6.0%). Companies (5.6%) appeared similarly.

The proportion of companies paying bonuses was higher in companies with 300 or more employees (75.9%) than in companies with less than 300 employees (64.8%).

The most common method of paying Lunar New Year bonuses was ‘payment as regular bonus only’ (64.3%), followed by ‘payment of only separate bonuses’ (31.2%) and ‘simultaneous payment of regular bonuses and separate bonuses’ (4.5%).

This year's separate Lunar New Year bonus was paid at a similar level to last year with a high response of 88.3%. In addition, 7.4% responded that they were paid more than last year, and 4.3% responded that they were paid less than last year.

In addition, 50.0% of responding companies responded that this year's Lunar New Year economic situation (as of January) was ‘worse than the previous year’, while only 5.8% responded that it was ‘improved’. 44.3% of respondents said that the economy was ‘at a similar level to the previous year’.

By size, the response that the Lunar New Year economy was ‘worse than the previous year’ was 5.4 percentage points higher among companies with less than 300 employees (50.6%) than among companies with 300 or more employees (45.2%).

Meanwhile, 57.1% of companies responded that the factor expected to be the most burdensome on a company's business performance this year was ‘slow demand for products (services) due to the economic recession.’ This was followed by ‘increasing raw material prices’ (51.4%), ‘increasing labor costs’ (50.6%), and ‘increasing financial costs due to high interest rates’ (25.4%).

By size, the response to 'slow demand due to economic recession' was 8.5%p higher among companies with 300 or more employees (64.6%) than that of companies with less than 300 employees (56.1%), but the response to 'financial costs due to high interest rates' was higher among companies with less than 300 employees.
