브레이크뉴스 정명훈 기자= 지난 22대 총선에서 인천 계양을에 출마한 원희룡 후보의 후원회장을 맡은 전 축구 국가대표 선수인 이천수씨가 왜 선거판에 뛰어들게 됐는지 그 이유에 대해 설명했다.
이천수씨는 15일 조선일보와의 인터뷰에서 원희룡 후보와의 인연을 소개하며 운을 뗐다. 그는 "2016년 월드컵 4강 주역들이 제주 여자축구부를 방문했을 때 (원희룡 후보를) 처음 봤다"면서 "보좌관이 절친이라 몇번 같이 보다보니 친분이 쌓이고 서로를 좋아하게 됐다"고 말했다.
이어 그는 "처음엔 계양에 출마하지 말라고 만류했다"면서 "워낙 민주당이 강해 당선되기 힘든 지역 아닌가. 그런데도 오겠다고 하면 도와드리고 싶었다"고 후원회장을 맡게 된 배경을 말했다.
이천수는 또 지난 2020년 총선에선 송영길 전 더불어민주당 대표를 지원 유세한 것을 언급하며 "나는 어느 당도 지지하지 않는다. 정치도, 좌우도 모른다. 나는 사람만 본다. 송영길 대표는 내 축구 인생의 은인이었기 때문에 도왔다. 계양을을 위해 더 열심히 뛸 사람을 원했을 뿐이다. 이재명 후보는 어떤 분인지 내가 잘 모른다"고 했다.

원희룡 후보를 지원유세하던 과정에서 일부 시민과 실랑이가 빚어진데 대해선 "축구팬들이면 내 성질을 잘 알 것"이라며 "참다 참다 한 말씀 드린 것이고, 후보님께 피해가 가면 안되니까 그나마도 화를 누른 것"이라고 답했다.
마지막으로 낙선 인사까지도 동행한데 대해선 "후보님이 플랜카드로 인사를 대신하는 건 예의가 아니라 해서 따라 나섰다. 나는 원희룡 후보의 그런 소탈함과 진정성을 좋아했던 것 같다. 선거 유세를 도우며 당과 상관없이 원희룡을 뽑겠다는 분들이 많았다. 그래서 후회하지는 않는다"고 밝혔다.
