세종시교육청이 새롬고등학교 1층에 있는 독도체험관을 지난 3월에 재개관하여 활발히 운영하고 있다고 17일 밝혔다.
세종시교육청은 교육부로부터 독도체험관 개선사업을 지원받아 기존 독도체험관의 전시물을 다양화하고 체험 내용물(콘텐츠)을 강화했다.
독도체험관은 매주 화요일부터 토요일까지 09:00부터 17:00 사이에 누구나 무료로 관람할 수 있도록 운영되며, 독도체험관에 상주하는 운영실무사가 독도의 자연, 역사 등에 대한 수준 높은 해설을 진행하여 학생들의 체험 활동을 도와준다.
최근 독도와 관련된 여러 보도가 이어지고 있는 가운데, 학생들이 우리 역사와 문화를 올바르게 인식하고 세계 시민으로서의 역량을 함양할 수 있는 다양한 체험과 참여형 독도 교육의 필요성이 커지고 있다.
독도체험관은 ‘독도의 소개’, ‘독도의 역사’, ‘영상체험존’ 등을 상시로 운영하고 있다.
‘독도의 소개’에서는 1/500로 축소한 독도 모형, 양방향 해저지형, 독도의 다양한 생물 등에 관해 소개하고 있으며, ‘독도의 역사’에서는 역사적·지리적·국제법적과 관련된 대한민국의 독도영토주권을 입증하는 여러 사료를 전시하고 있다.

초등학생에게는 학년에 따라 구분된 프로그램이 제공되며, 1학년부터 4학년은 40분간 독도를 주제로 한 해설, 체험학습지 작성, 터널북 제작 활동을 5학년부터 6학년은 독도 팝업북 활동 등을 실시한다.
중·고등학생은 60분 동안 깊이 있는 독도 해설 청취, 체험학습지 작성, 독도의 등고선 모형 만들기 등의 활동을 체험한다.
최교진 교육감은 “독도체험관의 관람객 수가 2022년 3,140명, 2023년 3,808명으로 독도체험관이 활발하게 운영되고 있다.”라며 “새롭게 탄생한 독도체험관이 학생들에게 더욱 흥미 있고 역사적으로 의미 있는 공간이 될 것으로 기대하며, 청소년뿐만 아니라 시민들도 함께 참여할 수 있는 다양한 독도 관련 프로그램을 지원하기 위해 지속해서 노력하겠다.”라고 말했다.
