윤석열 대통령이 14일 미국·일본 전직 관료 및 학계 인사 등을 만나 국내외 주요 현안 관련 의견을 나눴다고 대통령실이 전했다.
대통령실은 "윤 대통령이 이날 오후 에드윈 퓰너 헤리티지재단 창립자를 포함 미·일 학계 및 전직 인사를 접견했다"며 이같이 전했다.
윤 대통령은 이날 오후 용산 대통령실에서 퓰너 헤리티지재단 창립자·폴 월포위츠 전 미국 국방부 부장관·모리모토 사토시 전 일본 방위대신 등을 접견했다. 이들은 아산정책연구원이 이날 주최한 행사에 참석하기 위해 방한했다.
윤 대통령은 "접견 인사들이 학계·언론계·정부에서 쌓은 풍부한 경륜과 폭넓은 식견을 바탕으로 한·미동맹-한·일관계에 기여해 왔다"고 평가했다.
퓰너 창립자를 비롯 미·일 전문가들은 "윤 대통령 취임 후 한·미동맹과 한·미·일 협력이 어느 때보다 높이 도약하고 있다"며 "한국이 자유·인권·법치의 보편적 가치를 토대로 한·미동맹 발전과 인태 지역 나아가 세계 평화·번영에 기여해 나가는 데 힘을 보태겠다"고 화답했다.
이 자리엔 제임스 스타인버그 전 미 국무부 부장관·캐런 하우스 전 월스트리트저널지 발행인·존 햄리 전략국제연구소(CSIS) 회장·정몽준 아산정책연구원 명예이사장·최강 아산정책연구원장 등이 함께 했다.
