길현수(吉賢洙. 62세) 화가. 이화여대를 졸업, 그림의 길, 외길 인생을 살아온 길현수 화가. 이 화가는 오직 화가로만 살아온 화가다. 그는 화가로 불리는 것보다 화가로 불리길 원한다. 길현수 화가의 전시회가 서울시 종로구 인사동 5길 26 '라메르 갤러리 1관'에서 2024년 5월 29일부터 6월3일까지 열렸었다.
길현수 화가는 이화여대와 이화여대 대학원(수료)을 졸업했다. 태어난 고향이 인천광역시 였다. 대한민국의 서쪽 해안가. 이곳 생활에서 영향을 받아서인지, 인천 지역 바닷가에 위치한 소래포구-강화도 등에서 신들린 듯, 오랜 기간 화업(畵業)에 정진(精進)해온 인물로 알려져 있다.
포구 또는 해안가란? 언제나 변함없이, 비린내 나는 생존의 현장이다. 치열한 삶의 현장, 어부들의 생활 터전이다. 해안가란, 보이는 그대로 원초적이다. 그래서인지 그(길현수)의 모든 그림 속에는 치열함-담대함이 깃들어 있다. 비어있지 않고, 꽉 차 있기도 하다. 그러면서도, 인간적이다. 이 때문에, 감동이 스스로 배어나기도 한다. 뿐만 아니라 그 어디에서 볼 수 없는, 신선한 아름다움을 선사해준다. 깊고 깊은 예술세계의 경지(境地)가 무언지 알게 해준다.

필자는 길현수 화가가 자신의 화실을 인천의 소래포구, 경기도 강화도-가평 등지로 옮기면서 서 그곳에서 작업하는 것을 계속해서 지켜봤다. 그는 서울 등의 도심보다는 바닷가, 어촌, 농촌 등지에서, 고독을 곱씹으면서, 화업(畵業)을 이끌었었다. 이런 곳, '해안가의 노을-해 뜨는 농촌마을-비린내 나는 소래포구의 어시장 등'에서 살고 있을 때, 원초적인 색감이 스멀스멀 몸속으로 스며들어서인지, 그런 색감들이 그림 속에 녹아 있는 것을 목격할 수 있다.
화가의 긴 삶에서, 비교적 가까이 해왔던 지인(知人)이자 동행자(同行者)인 조범제 화가는 길현수 화가를 잘 분석해낸다. 길현수 화가는 독특한 자기만의 예술세계를 구축했다, 절제된 화면 구성을 하고 있다, 한 작품 한 작품이 완성도가 높다, 대범한 필력을 읽을 수 있다, 숙성되고 굳건해진 예술철학을 가지고 자기만의 예술세계를 구축(構築)했다고 평한다.
3균주의 조소앙의 친조카인 조범제 화가는 길현수 화가의 작품세계를 말하면서 “자기 성찰이 아주 강한 화가라고 본다”면서 “화가들의 경우 매너리즘에 빠지기가 쉬운데 길현수 화가는 강한 관조(觀照)의 정신으로 자기만의 독창적인 예술 기법을 이미 만들어냈다, 그의 작품을 보면 자연-우주와 화가가 하나임을 알 수 있게 한다”라고 강조했다.

길현수 화가가 천착해온 예술세계의 하나인, 누드화 그림들에는 그 어떤 의미가 내재(內在)돼 있을까? 이 분야의 전문 화가인 장영주 화가는, 누드화를 작업하는 이유에서 “우리 몸에는 얼마나 많은 기능과 작용이 준비 되어 있는지 아무도 모른다. 오죽하면 ‘우주와 나는 하나다=우아일체(宇我一體)‘라는 표현까지 있을까? 그 길은 오직 몸을 통해서만 갈 수 있는 길 없는 길”이라면서 “나는 누드작업으로 붓을 지팡이 삼아 가고 있다”라고 소개하고 있다. 길현수 화가의 누드는, 장영주 화가가 누드에 대해 정의한 '우주와 나는 하나다'는 의미를 충족하고 있다고 하겠다.
길현수 화가 형상화한 누드화 작품 가운데는 누드모델의 정면을 보여주는 그림이 있는가 하면, 누워 있는 담대한 작품도 있다. 그런가하면 뒷모습, 엿 모습 등 다양한 포즈도 등장한다. 여체의 아름다움을 두루두루 조망(眺望)한다. 일부러 미화(美化)하지 않고, 눈에 보이는 그대로를 화폭에 옮겨, 리얼리티 그대로가 완성돼 있다. 삶의 애환 과정을 말해주는 뱃살도 그대로 드러내 보여준다. 그런가하면 풍성한, 여체만의 특성인 엉덩이도 가감 없이 보여 지게 한다. 그의 작품 가운데는 과감한 남성 누드도 함께 미(美)의 자웅을 겨룬다. 예술에 그 어떤 성역이 없음을 보여준다.
유럽에서는 16세기 초, 화가들이 성당의 천장에 누드화를 그렸을 정도로 누드화 문화의 꽃을 피웠다. 그런데 우리네 문화는 유교 문화시대여서 그런지, 그런 문화를 가져보지 못했다. 6.25 전쟁 이후에서야 비로소 그런 그림문화를 공부할 수 있는 시대를 살았다. 길현수 화가는 현대 문명세대에서 낳고 자란, 현대사회의 지성을 겸비한 화가이다. 그래서 거칠 게 없다. 탄생 이후의 생존시대가 그랬다. 이번 전시회에서 선보인 누드화 가운데 남성 누드화는 담대함 그 자체이다. 그림을 보는 순간, 와~하고 놀라게 한다.
길현수 화가의 누드 작품들을 보노라면 편안하기도 하지만, 이글이글 불타는 정오의 태양을 닮아있어서인지 뜨겁게 느껴지기도 한다. 잠들어 있던, 영혼까지도 흔들어 놓는 형국과 마주친다. 옆으로 웅크리고 드러누워 있는 누드작품을 바라보면 어머니 자궁 속의 태아를 연상할 수 있다. 순수한 자연, 그대로를 의식케 한다. 여체 누드에 함께 등장하는 여인 곁의 꽃, 나비, 나무, 하늘, 바다. 풀 등등이 누드와 어울리도록 해 놓았다. 인간과 자연이 하나 되어 인간도 자연의 일부임을 각인 시킨다.

필자는 길현수 화가의 과거 전시회 때 “그는 인천 소래포구 바람과 함께 숨 쉬면서 화업(畵業)을 해왔다. 포구에 나와 하루 종일 일하는 사람들, 배가 들고 나는 포구 풍경, 해가 뉘엿뉘엿 질 무렵 석양햇살을 벗하며 정박한 배...그런 그림을 수 십 년 간 그렸다. 그래서 그는 '소래포구의 화가'로 불리기도 한다. 포구에는 어부-생선을 사고파는 상인들이 살고 있고, 그런 포구에는 삶을 영위하기 위한 거래와 흥정이 성행한다. 먹고 살아가야만 하는 발버둥, 진솔한 삶의 현장, 그 속에 스민 삶의 애환을 담아낸 화가의 작품에서는 휴머니티가 줄줄 흐른다”라고, 평한 바 있다.

길현수 화가는 이 전시회에 긴 기간 공(功)을 들여 완성한 누드화뿐만 아니라 여러 종류의 꽃 작품들도 상재(上梓) 했다. 아름답고 고운 꽃 작품들을 감상토록 배려했다는 것이다.
