세종시가 국제정원도시박람회의 성공적인 개최와 산림을 통한 탄소중립 실현을 위해 아시아산림협력기구(AFoCO)가 2026 세종 손을 잡았다.
최민호 시장과 박종호 아시아산림협력기구(AFoCO) 사무총장은 3일 시청 세종실에서 ‘정원 속의 도시, 세종’ 건설과 2026년 세종국제정원도시박람회 개최 협력 등을 위한 업무협약을 체결했다.
아시아산림협력기구(AFoCO)는 기후변화·산림 복원 등 국제적 산림 현안에 대응하고 아시아 국가 간 산림 분야 협력 강화를 위해 한-아세안 특별정상회의에서 제안해 2018년에 설립된 국제기구다.
협약에 따라 정원 속의 도시 세종 완성을 위한 협력체계 구축 ,2026 세종 국제정원도시박람회 참여·홍보 ,산림을 통한 탄소중립 실현과 국제 협력사업 발굴·추진 ,AFoCO 회원국 지자체와의 산림분야 협력 증진 등을 추진할 예정이다.
이번 협약으로 시는 국제적 네트워크를 활용한 박람회 홍보와 함께 산림을 통한 탄소중립 실현이라는 글로벌 과제에도 한 발 더 다가설 것으로 기대된다.
최민호 시장은 “아시아산림협력기구는 유엔총회 옵서버(Observer) 지위를 취득한 국제기구인 만큼 이번 협약을 통해 세종의 국제적 위상을 높이고 외국인 관람객을 유치하는 데 큰 도움이 될 것으로 기대한다”며 “2026년 세종 국제정원도시박람회의 성공적인 개최를 위해 아시아산림협력기구의 적극적인 협조를 기대한다”고 말했다.
한편 ‘2026 세종 국제정원도시박람회’는 지난 4월 30일 기획재정부로부터 국제행사 대상사업으로 선정됐다. 시는 오는 9월 박람회 조직위원회를 출범하는 등 박람회 준비에 박차를 가하고 있다.
