President Yoon Seok-yeol exercised his right to reconsider (veto) the 'Act on Appointment of Special Prosecutors in Cases of Marine Corps Deaths in the Line of Duty (Special Prosecutor Chae Act)' approved at the Cabinet meeting on the 9th (Korean time).
President Yoon, who is visiting Honolulu, Hawaii, USA prior to attending the NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) summit, approved the request for reconsideration of the 'Special Prosecutor Chae Marine Act' through electronic approval there on the 8th (local time).
This is President Yoon's 15th veto since his inauguration, and he has already vetoed the 'Chae Marine Special Prosecutor Act' passed by the 21st National Assembly in May.
The President's Office said, "As the actual truth and responsibility have been revealed as a result of the police investigation announced yesterday, the Act on Special Prosecutors for Marines in the Line of Duty, which was unilaterally pushed by the opposition party, must now be withdrawn." It added, "It is unfortunate that the Marine died while performing his duty after being called to his country." “There should no longer be any misuse for political purposes,” he said.
