윤석열 대통령이 11일 차기 검찰총장 후보자에 심우정 전 법무차관(53·사법연수원 26기)을 지명했다.
정진석 대통령 비서실장은 이날 오후 용산 대통령실 브리핑에서 이같은 인선 사안을 전했다. 심 후보자는 이원석 검찰총장 후임이자 윤석열 정부 두 번째 검찰총장으로 윤 대통령 집권 말기인 오는 2026년 9월까지 2년 간 검찰 조직을 이끌게 된다.
정 실장은 "합리적 리더십으로 검찰 구성원들 신망이 두텁고 형사 절차·검찰 제도에 대한 높은 식견과 법치주의 확립에 대해 확고한 신념을 가진 분"이라며 "향후 안정적으로 검찰 조직을 이끌고 헌법·법치주의 수호·국민 보호란 검찰 본연 역할을 잘 수행할 적임자로 판단했다"고 지명 배경을 전했다.
충남 공주 출신 심 후보자는 1971년생으로 휘문고·서울대 법학과 졸업 후 지난 2000년 서울지검 검사로 임관해 서울중앙지검 형사1부장검사·법무부 기획조정실장·서울동부지검장·인천지검장·대검찰청 차장검사 등을 지냈다.
심 후보자는 검찰 내 대표적 '기획통'으로 꼽히는 가운데 지난 2016년 최순실 국정농단 특검팀에서 윤 대통령과 근무했고, 윤 대통령이 서울중앙지검장을 지낼 당시 형사1부장으로 함께 일한 바 있다.
앞서 검찰총장후보추천위원회는 지난 7일 제46대 검찰총장 최종 후보로 심 후보자와 함께 임관혁(58·26기) 서울고검장·신자용(52·28기) 대검찰청 차장검사·이진동(56·28기) 대구고검장 등 4명으로 압축한 바 있다.
