윤석열 대통령이 12일 신임 국방장관 후보자에 김용현 대통령경호처장을 지명하고 국가안보실장에 신원식 국방장관, 신설 외교안보특별보좌관에 장호진 안보실장을 각각 내정했다. 또 국가인권위원장 후보자에 안창호 전 헌법재판소 재판관을 지명했다.
정진석 대통령 비서실장은 이날 용산 대통령실 브리핑에서 이같은 외교·안보 주요직 인선안을 발표했다.
정 실장은 김 후보자에 대해 "군 요직을 두루 섭렵한 국방·안보 분야 전문가로 군 안팎으로부터 두터운 신망을 받아왔다"며 "특히 우리 정부 초대 경호처장으로 군 통수권자 의중을 누구보다도 잘 이해하고 있어 국방장관으로 적임자라 판단했다"고 전했다.
1959년생 경남 마산 출생 김 국방장관 후보자는 육군사관학교 38기로 임관한 예비역 중장 출신으로 수도방위사령관·합참 작전본부장 등 군 요직을 두루 섭렵한 국방·안보 분야 전문가다.
김 후보자는 "국내외 안보 정세가 그 어느 때보다 엄중하다"며 "국방장관에 임명된다면 통수권자인 대통령 뜻을 받들어 강력한 힘을 기초로 한 확고한 안보태세를 구축하고 이를 통해 국가 경제 발전은 물론 민생 안정에도 기여하겠다"고 소감을 밝혔다.
정 실장은 신 안보실장에 대해 "지난 30년 이상 군에서 근무한 3성 장군 출신으로 수도방위사령부 사령관·합참 차장·21대 국회의원 등을 거쳤다"며 "국방·안보 분야 풍부한 현장 경험·식견을 갖추고 있고 현 국방장관으로서 당면 안보 현안에도 이해도가 높아 한치 안보 공백 없이 대통령을 보좌해 국가 안보를 책임질 것"이라고 평했다.
1958년생 신 안보실장은 육사 37기로 임관해 육사 생도대장(준장)·3사단장(소장)·국방부 정책기획관·수도방위사령관(중장)·합참 작전본부장·합참 차장 등을 역임했다. 전역 후 대한민국 수호 예비역 장성단(대수장)을 주도했고 옛 미래통합당 비례대표로 제21대 국회의원이 됐다.
정 실장은 장 특보에 대해 "북미 관계에 대한 전문가일 뿐 아닌 북핵·러시아 등 4강 외교에 두루 밝은 정통외교관 출신"이라며 "우리 정부에서 초대 러시아 대사·외교부 1차관·안보실장을 연이어 맡아 다양한 외교적 성과를 끌어냈다"고 전했다.
정 실장은 안 후보자에 대해선 "2012∼2018년까지 6년간 헌재 재판관에 봉직하며 사회적 약자를 위해 소신 있는 목소리를 내왔다"며 "검사 재직 시엔 법무부 인권과에 근무하며 공익법무관 제도를 주도적 도입하고, 인권과를 인권국으로 확대하는 방안을 마련하는 등 법률 복지 향상에 크게 기여했다"고 전했다.
대통령실은 "핵심 국익 관련 전략 과제들을 각별히 챙기기 위해 외교안보특보직을 신설했다"고 전했다.
