한중도시우호협회는 8월14일 보도자료에서 “중국 당 기관지 런민르바오(人民日報) 영문판 자매지인 글로벌타임즈에 이어 중문판 자매지인 환추스바오(環球時報)가 최근 권기식 한중도시우호협회장의 인터뷰를 큰 비중으로 보도해 눈길을 끌고 있다.”면서 “환추스바오는 지난 9일 7면과 8면 2개면에 걸쳐 '한국은 미중간 전략적 균형외교를 회복해야 한다'는 제목으로 권기식 한중도시우호협회장과의 인터뷰를 크게 보도했다. 중국 당 기관지인 런민르바오의 영문판 자매지인 글로벌타임즈도 지난달 26일 6면 한페이지를 전면 할애해 권 회장의 인터뷰를 상세하게 보도했다. 중국의 유력 당 언론들이 전략적 균형외교의 필요성을 주장하는 권 회장과의 인터뷰를 대서특필한 것은 한국의 대중(對中) 정책의 변화를 기대하는 중국 당국의 입장을 반영한 것으로 풀이된다. 또한 한국인이 이처럼 중국 유력 언론들의 특집 인터뷰 대상이 된 것은 첫 사례로 알려져 있다”고 전했다.

이 자료에 따르면, 김대중 정부 청와대 출신인 권기식 회장(현 서울미디어대학원대학교 석좌교수)은 지난 2004년 일본 외무성 초청 시즈오카현립대 초빙교수, 2017년 중국 외교부 초청 칭화대 방문학자, 2022년 중국 외교부 초청 베이징대 방문학자를 거친 한중 관계 전문가로서 한국의 국익을 위한 '전략적 균형외교'의 필요성을 꾸준히 강조해왔다. 그는 지난 2016년 한중도시우호협회를 설립한 이후 한중 지방정부 교류와 경제협력에 앞장서고 있다.

"On the 9th, the Huanqiu Shibao reported the interview with Kwon Ki-sik, Chairman of the Korea-China Cities Friendship Association, in detail on two pages, pages 7 and 8, under the title, 'Korea must restore strategic balance diplomacy between the US and China.' The Global Times, the English-language sister paper of the Chinese Communist Party's official newspaper, also reported in detail on Chairman Kwon's interview on page 6 on the 26th of last month. It is also known that this is the first time that a Korean has been the subject of a special interview by influential Chinese media outlets.” According to the data, Chairman Kwon Ki-sik (currently a distinguished professor at Seoul Media Graduate School), who is from the Blue House under the Kim Dae-jung administration, has been a visiting professor at Shizuoka University in 2004 at the invitation of the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, a visiting scholar at Tsinghua University in 2017 at the invitation of the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and a visiting scholar at Peking University in 2022 at the invitation of the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and as an expert on Korea-China relations, he has consistently emphasized the need for “strategically balanced diplomacy” for Korea’s national interests. Since establishing the Korea-China City Friendship Association in 2016, he has been leading the way in exchanges between Korea and China’s local governments and economic cooperation.
