넷플릭스 한국 내 언론 홍보 대행사 더시그니처사는 8월20일 “넷플릭스 <나는 신이다: 신이 배신한 사람들>을 제작한 조성현 PD에 대한 최근 보도에 대해, 조성현 PD의 공식 입장”을 전했다.
조성현 PD는 이 입장문에서 “서울 마포경찰서가 <나는 신이다>를 만든 저를 성폭력범죄의 처벌 등에 관한 특례법(성폭력처벌법) 위반 혐의로 서울서부지검에 사건 송치했다는 소식에 많이 놀라셨겠다 생각한다. 제가 마치 성범죄자가 된 것처럼 작성된 기사도 보였고, 이에 호응하는 JMS 신도들의 댓글과 환호도 목도했다”면서 사실관계를 밝혔다.
조성현 PD는 이 입장문에서 “마포경찰서가 언급한 장면들은 현재 작품에서 볼 수 있듯 얼굴에 높은 수준의 모자이크가 적용되어 있다. JMS는 해당 영상이 날조됐다고 작품 공개 이전부터 끊임없이 주장한 바 있다. 이에, 저는 사이비 종교의 비정상성을 고발하는 공익적인 목적과 사실성을 위해 신체에 대한 모자이크를 적용하지 않았다. 이렇게 제작된 <나는 신이다>는 영상물등급위원회의 등급 심사와 결정을 받고 공개됐다.”고 전제하고 “마포경찰서는 기소 의견 송치를 통해 <나는 신이다>가 얻어낸 공익이 미미하고, 얼굴과 음성을 변조해 내보낸 장면들을 지칭하며 JMS 열성 신도들의 사익이 더 크다는 비교를 하고 있다. 더 나아가, JMS 사건을 조명한 PD인 저를 성범죄자로, <나는 신이다>는 음란물로 낙인찍었다. 이 주장대로라면, 정부가 음란물에 대통령상을 표창했다는 뜻이 되며, 대한민국 검찰과 법원이 음란물을 증거로 활용하고 공개를 허락했다는 뜻이 된다. 마포경찰서의 판단으로 인해 제가 처한 현 상황을 생각하면 매우 참담하다”고 주장했다.

<나는 신이다>가 세상의 빛을 본 지 1년하고도 절반 이상이 지났습니다. JMS는 작품의 공개를 막기 위해 상영금지가처분 신청을 했지만, 재판부는 작품의 공개를 허락했습니다. 그 결과, JMS의 실태를 알리고, 대중의 공분을 자아냈으며, 어두웠던 진실이 세상에 드러났습니다.
시사교양 PD로 살며 소송과 악성댓글은 일상이나 마찬가지입니다. 하지만, 이러한 저도 이번에는 마음이 괴롭습니다. 저와 제 아내의 이야기를 엿들은 7살짜리 아들의 한마디, “아빠 감옥 가?” 때문입니다. 눈물이 쏟아지려는 걸 참고 애써 웃었습니다.
지난 3년 동안 가족들의 고생이 컸습니다. 아내는 신변 보호용 스마트워치를 차고 다녀야 했고, 아들과 딸은 아빠와 시간을 거의 보내지 못했습니다. <나는 신이다>로 대한민국 콘텐츠 대상에서 대통령 표창을 받았을 때도 마음이 편치 않았던 이유입니다.
시사 고발물을 만드는 이유는 힘없고 억울한 누군가를 대신해 ‘찍소리’라도 해줄 수 있는 일이기 때문입니다. 이러한 ‘찍소리’ 때문에 세상이 변하는 걸 목격할 수 있기 때문이고, 다음 세대가 앞으로 살아갈 세상이 나아질 거란 확신 때문입니다. <나는 신이다>라는 찍소리는 아버지를 대상으로 한 테러, 본인 삶의 이익을 포기하면서까지 30년을 JMS와 싸워온 A 교수님, 그리고 M이라는 홍콩인 여성의 결단과 희생으로부터 시작됐습니다.
<나는 신이다> 공개 이후, JMS 전체 신도의 절반이 탈퇴했고, 정명석은 더 이상 추가 성범죄를 저지를 수 없게 구속됐습니다. 대한민국 사회는 사이비 종교 문제의 심각성을 다시 한번 인식하게 됐습니다. 정말로 세상이 나아진 셈입니다.

2022년 초 M(홍콩인 여성)이 다큐멘터리 촬영을 위해 한국으로 오기 전, 저는 M의 아버지와 약속했습니다. M을 안전히 잘 돌려보내겠다고, 그리고 중간에 멈추고 포기하지 않겠다는 약속을 했습니다. 그 약속을 지키기 위해서라도 싸워야 합니다.
“아빠는 절대 감옥 안 가니 걱정 안 해도 돼. 아빠가 이길 수 있어”라고 제 아들과 한 약속을 지키기 위해서라도 저는 끝까지 싸울 겁니다. 머지않아 과연 누가 무엇을 감추고 싶었는지, 이 사회가 모두 목격하게 될 것입니다. 그리고, 대한민국의 공권력이 사이비 종교가 아닌 공익을 위한 정의 실현에 앞장서주길 바랍니다."
Netflix <I Am God> Producer Jo Sung-hyun "Statement"

On August 20, Netflix's Korean media relations agency The Signature released "Producer Jo Sung-hyun's official position on recent reports about Producer Jo Sung-hyun who produced Netflix's <I Am God: People Betrayed by God>."
In this statement, Producer Jo Sung-hyun stated, "I think you must have been very surprised to hear that the Mapo Police Station in Seoul sent me, who created <I Am God>, to the Seoul Western District Prosecutors' Office on charges of violating the Act on Special Cases Concerning the Punishment, etc. of Sexual Crimes (Sexual Violence Punishment Act). I saw articles written as if I were a sex offender, and I also saw comments and cheers from JMS believers in response."
In this statement, Producer Jo Sung-hyun stated, "As you can see in the current work, the scenes mentioned by the Mapo Police Station have high-level mosaics applied to the face. JMS has continuously claimed that the video in question was fabricated even before the work was released. Accordingly, I did not apply mosaics to the body for the public interest purpose of exposing the abnormality of pseudo-religions and for the sake of truth. <I Am God>, which was produced in this way, was released after undergoing a rating review and decision by the Media Rating Board.” He asserted, “Mapo Police Station, through the submission of an indictment opinion, is comparing the public interest gained by <I Am God> to be minimal and the private interests of JMS zealous believers are greater by referring to the scenes in which faces and voices were altered and released. Furthermore, they have branded me, the PD who shed light on the JMS incident, a sex offender and <I Am God> as pornography. If this claim is true, it means that the government awarded pornography with the Presidential Award, and that the prosecution and courts of the Republic of Korea used pornography as evidence and permitted its release. I feel very devastated when I think about my current situation due to the judgment of Mapo Police Station.”

"Regarding the recent reports about PD Jo Sung-hyun, who produced Netflix's <I Am God: People Betrayed by God>, here is PD Jo Sung-hyun's official position
I will tell you the facts. The scenes mentioned by Mapo Police Station have high-level mosaics applied to the face, as can be seen in the current work. JMS has continuously claimed that the video was fabricated even before the work was released. Accordingly, I did not apply mosaics to the body for the public interest purpose of exposing the abnormality of pseudo-religions and for the sake of truth. <I Am God>, which was produced in this way, was released after undergoing a rating review and decision by the Film Rating Board.
It has been more than a year and a half since <I Am God> was released to the world. JMS applied for an injunction to prevent the work from being released, but the court allowed the work to be released. As a result, the reality of JMS was revealed, public outrage was generated, and the dark truth was revealed to the world.
As a current affairs PD, lawsuits and malicious comments are part of everyday life. However, even I, this time, am feeling distressed. My 7-year-old son overheard my wife and I talking and said, “Dad, are you going to jail?” Because of that. I held back tears and tried to smile.
My family has suffered greatly over the past three years. My wife had to wear a smartwatch for personal protection, and my son and daughter could hardly spend time with their father. That’s why I felt uneasy when I received the Presidential Award at the Korea Content Awards for <I Am God>.
The reason I make investigative news is because I can ‘scream’ on behalf of someone who is powerless and wronged. Because I can witness the world changing because of these ‘screams,’ and because I am confident that the world the next generation will live in will become a better place. The screaming of <I Am God> began with the terror attack on my father, Professor A who fought against JMS for 30 years while giving up his own interests, and the determination and sacrifice of a Hong Kong woman named M.
After the release of <I Am God>, half of all JMS believers withdrew, and Jeong Myeong-seok was arrested so that he could no longer commit additional sexual crimes. South Korean society has once again recognized the seriousness of the problem of pseudo-religions. The world has really become a better place.
However, the Mapo Police Station, through the prosecution opinion, is comparing the public interest gained by <I Am God> to the fact that the scenes that were broadcast with faces and voices altered are minimal and that the private interests of JMS zealots are greater. Furthermore, they have branded me, the PD who shed light on the JMS case, a sex offender and <I Am God> a pornographic material. If this claim is true, it means that the government has awarded the Presidential Award for pornography, and that the Korean prosecution and courts have used pornography as evidence and permitted its release.
When I think about the current situation I am in due to the Mapo Police Station’s decision, I feel very devastated. However, I will continue to fight.
Before M (a Hong Kong woman) came to Korea to film a documentary in early 2022, I made a promise to M’s father. I promised that I would return M safely and that I would not stop and give up in the middle. I must fight to keep that promise.
“Don’t worry, Dad will never go to jail. I will fight to the end to keep the promise I made to my son, “Dad, you can win.” Soon, the whole society will witness who tried to hide what. And I hope that the public power of the Republic of Korea will take the lead in realizing justice for the public interest, not for a pseudo-religion.”
