직헌(直軒) 허달재 화가는 국수(國手)인 조부 의제(毅薺) 밑에서 조막손이 때부터 지필묵을 어루고 달래 왔다. 군계일학 청출어람 경계를 부단히 넘어, 작품의 지평(紙平)을 해외로 확장해온 일등공신이다. 허달재 화가는 8월21일부터 9월13일까지 서울시 종로구 율곡로 3길67 '이화익 갤러리'에서 전시회를 연다.
허달재 화가는 1980년대 말엔 뉴욕에 초빙교수로 가 동양화의 필법 및 내포 함의된 예술적 가치를 벽안의 후학에게 가르쳤다. 20년대 초반엔 베이징에 개인 갤러리를 열어, 중국 화단과 정계에 두루 교분을 쌓아 문화외교 전도사로서 헌신했다. 2021년엔 UAE 아부다비에 '이화익 갤러리'의 주선으로 전시회를 연 바, 왕족 컬렉터가 대형 매화그림을 일거에 구입해가 초단기 완판되는 영예도 얻었다.

허달재 화백이 평생 수련한 남종화는, ‘사진 찍듯 정교한 사실주의적 묘사’를 중시한 북종화에 비해, 관념 추상성 화두(話頭) 참구(參究) 참선(參禪)의 결과물을 그림에 ‘피와 살’을 입히듯 했다. 북종화가 사진 같은 정교한 창작물에 집착한다면, 남종화는 창작물이 주는 관념 사상 메시지를 중시하는 물아일체(物我一體)적 창작과정과 결과물을 동일시한다고 볼 수 있다.
세상만사가 어디 다 아름답고 위대하랴! 허 화백의 흐드러진 모란과 가지끝 춘설을 뚫고 몽실몽실 무리지어 군집을 이룬 매화를 보노라면, 씨앗이 최초 발아해서 이르기까지의 생명의 궤적 속에 사계(四季) 풍파를 견딘 세월이 엄중히 가슴에 와 닿는다.
남종화의 거두 삼대의 정점에서 꽃피운 직헌(直軒) 허달재 화가의 글로벌한 활약 성취는 결코 허투루 된 게 아니다.

칠십 평생 손끝으로 연단하며 불면의 자아성찰을 통한 결과물로서, 이번 '이화익 갤러리'에 내놓은 흐드러진 모란과 수백수천의 매화송이를 품은 가지를 범접 감흥하기란 쉽지 않다. 누구에게는 처음이자 마지막일지 모를 이번 허달재 화가의 모란-매화 전시회는, 고매한 감상과 가전보도(家傳寶圖)의 컬렉터들에게도 만나기 힘든 기회이다. samsohun@naver.com

[Art Review] Painter Heo Dal-jae of Jikheon... 'Peony-Plum Series' Exhibition
After New York-Beijing-Abu Dhabi, back at 'Lee Hwa-ik Gallery' in Jongno-gu, Seoul!

Painter Heo Dal-jae of Jikheon has been teaching and cultivating his brush and ink since he was a child under his grandfather, the national master. He is a first-class contributor who has constantly crossed the boundaries of military and academic discipline and expanded the horizons of his works overseas. Painter Heo Dal-jae will be holding an exhibition at 'Lee Hwa-ik Gallery' at 67 Yulgok-ro 3-gil, Jongno-gu, Seoul from August 21 to September 13.
Painter Heo Dal-jae went to New York as a visiting professor in the late 1980s and taught the brushwork and the artistic value contained in Oriental painting to his students in Byeokan. In the early 20s, he opened a private gallery in Beijing, and devoted himself to being a missionary of cultural diplomacy by building relationships with the Chinese art world and politics. In 2021, he held an exhibition in Abu Dhabi, UAE, arranged by the 'Lee Hwa-ik Gallery', and had the honor of having a large plum blossom painting sold out in a short period of time when a royal collector purchased it all at once.
Namjonghwa, which Heo Dal-jae practiced his entire life, put the results of abstract ideas, koan (話頭), study (參究), and meditation (參禪) into his paintings as if putting 'blood and flesh' on them, compared to Bukjonghwa, which emphasized 'photographically sophisticated realistic depiction'. While Bukjonghwa is obsessed with elaborate creations like photographs, Namjonghwa can be seen as identifying the creative process and results of the material-self unity (物我一體) that emphasizes the conceptual and ideological messages that creations convey.
Where in the world can everything be beautiful and great! When looking at the flowing peonies and plum blossoms that pierce through the spring snow at the tips of branches by Heo Hwa-baek, the years of enduring the four seasons of hardships in the trajectory of life from the first germination of a seed to its final destination come to mind.
The global achievements of Heo Dal-jae, a painter of Jikheon (直軒), who blossomed at the peak of the three generations of Namjonghwa, were by no means in vain.
As the result of seventy years of practice and sleepless self-reflection, it is not easy to fully appreciate the flowing peonies and branches containing hundreds and thousands of plum blossoms that are on display at the 'Lee Hwa-ik Gallery'. This peony-plum blossom exhibition by Heo Dal-jae, which may be the first and last for some, is a rare opportunity even for collectors of noble appreciation and family treasures. samsohun@naver.com
