【브레이크뉴스 경주】박희경 기자=한국수력원자력(사장 황주호, 이하 한수원)은 23일 대전 한국원자력연구원(이하 KAERI) 본관에서 한국형 SMR의 기술 개발 및 사업화 촉진을 위한 상호협력 양해각서(MOU)를 체결했다고 밝혔다.

한수원은 이번 협약을 통해 KAERI와SMR개발, 실증 및 사업화를 위한 기술/인력 지원, 기술·정보 교류 및 시설·장비 공동 활용에 상호협력해 나갈 예정이다.
한수원은 산업부·과기정통부 공동으로 추진중인 혁신형 SMR 기술개발 사업에 참여 중이다. 혁신형 SMR(i-SMR)은 지난해 말 기본설계가 완료됐으며, 오는 2025년12월까지 표준설계가 진행된다. 또한, 2028년 표준설계인가 취득을 목표로 기술 개발에박차를 가하고 있다.
KAERI는 한국표준형원전 설계기술 자립과 개발의 주역으로 세계적인 수준의 대한민국 원전 기술 개발확보에 큰 역할을 해왔다. SMR 분야에서도 최근 한수원과 공동으로 표준설계인가 취득을 위해 노력 중인 경수로 기반의 SMART뿐만 아니라 차세대 소형원자로 노형 기술 개발에도 주력하고 있다.
황주호 한수원 사장은“이번 협약을통해 한수원이 축적한 국내원전 건설·운영 경험과 해외 사업역량을바탕으로 KAERI와 함께 차세대 소형원자로 시장에서 기술 주도권 확보 및 적기 상업화 달성을 기대한다”고 말했다.

Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power and Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute Join Hands for SMR Technology Development and Commercialization
Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (President Hwang Joo-ho, hereinafter referred to as KHNP) announced on the 23rd that it signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for mutual cooperation to promote technology development and commercialization of Korean-type SMRs at the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (hereinafter referred to as KAERI) headquarters in Daejeon.
Through this agreement, KHNP plans to cooperate with KAERI in technology/personnel support for SMR development, verification, and commercialization, technology/information exchange, and joint use of facilities and equipment.
KHNP is participating in the innovative SMR technology development project jointly promoted by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy and the Ministry of Science and ICT. The basic design of the innovative SMR (i-SMR) was completed at the end of last year, and the standard design will be conducted by December 2025. In addition, it is accelerating technology development with the goal of obtaining standard design approval in 2028.
KAERI has played a major role in securing world-class nuclear power plant technology development in Korea as a leading player in the development and independence of Korean standard nuclear power plant design technology. In the SMR field, in addition to the light-water reactor-based SMART, which is currently working with Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power to obtain standard design approval, it is also focusing on the development of next-generation small reactor technology.
Hwang Joo-ho, president of Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power, said, “Through this agreement, we expect to secure technological leadership in the next-generation small reactor market and achieve timely commercialization together with KAERI based on the domestic nuclear power plant construction and operation experience and overseas business capabilities that Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power has accumulated.”
